The project aims to increase interest and studies in animal welfare, in the policy and legal framework governing this area in the EU and in the field of animal ethics.

Or does interpretation always depend on context, expertise, and perspective?

Even when animals appear active and undisturbed — as in this footage recorded on campus — the evidentiary value of visual material remains inherently limited and context-dependent.

These are some of the issues we address during the Summer School.

Yet their presence is still only marginally recognised as either a potential risk or a source of health benefits.
What implications does this have for a truly integrated One Health approach?

The relationship between humans and companion animals is often described in emotional terms — yet it also raises complex ethical and legal questions.

At the Summer School in Animal Welfare and Ethics, we explore these issues from an interdisciplinary perspective, bringing together veterinary science, law, and bioethics.

The SAWE Summer School officially opened with the welcome address of the Director, marking the beginning of an intense and stimulating week of discussion on animal welfare, ethics, veterinary medicine, and law.

A great start to a truly interdisciplinary experience.

Special thanks to the Erasmus + Jean Monnet project for making this interdisciplinary experience possible.

📢 Application deadline extended

Following a number of requests, the deadline for applications to the Summer School has been extended and it will be possible to attend the Summer School online.

🗓 New deadline: 10 May
📍 Programme dates: 18–22 May

The Summer School offers an international and interdisciplinary environment, bringing together legal, ethical and scientific perspectives on animal welfare, with particular attention to current European regulatory developments.

Applications are open to students and early-career researchers interested in engaging with these topics in a rigorous academic setting.
