Several new uncontrolled objects are generated by fragmentation that occurs in orbit, representing a danger for the space population of active objects. Identify, reconstruct, and monitor them is of outmost importance to ensure the safety of the current and future space missions.

The new paper by our Andrea Muciaccia and Camilla Colombo in collaboration with the SPIRE Lab of DAER, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana and INAF - Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, presents the work done in terms of observation, monitoring and reconstruction of the Cosmos 1408 fragmentation occurred on the 15th November 2021.

Seminar annoucement!

Yu Nakajima, GNC research engineer from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will give a seminar today entitled: "Rendezvous Trajectory Optimization Considering Relative Navigation Error"

Join us today at 11:30 the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (DAER) - Sala Consiglio.

Yu Nakajima has been working at Polimi within the COMPASS group for a year integrating his experience in JAXA and theories researched in Polimi to achieve safe and robust rendezvous against non-cooperative target. He holds a B.E. and M.E. degree from Keio University, Japan. He has been working for JAXA almost 10 years since then, involving the development of GPS receiver for GEO and research on the non-cooperative target rendezvous. He was a member of CRD2 program, a Japanese program to demonstrate the active debris removal of a large scale target.

From the 6th to the 8th of June, Politecnico di Milano hosted the First “Space capacity allocation for the sustainability of space activities” workshop, open to all researchers, space operators and regulators working in the space debris field.

The workshop was a great opportunity to discuss and share the novelties on the sustainability of the space activities and the related evolution of the space environment.

This was achieved thanks to 29 presentations on current advances in research on space capacity modelling and management (including policy and economic aspects), and to discussions on space sustainability and space capacity management among all the participants coming from 5 continents and more than 30 institutions!

We would like to thank Secure World Foundation for helping to organise and co-financed the event, to thank the Organising and Scientific Committee for their help in realising the event, and to thank all the participants for actively and collaboratively contributing to the workshop.

This was just the beginning… see you next year!

Exciting News! Politecnico di Milano successfully hosted the 2nd Space Debris Day, where industry experts shared valuable insights on space debris management, covering surveillance, situational awareness, traffic management, modelling, and mitigation strategies.

Networking opportunities allowed students to connect with professionals from global companies and institutions, expanding their perspectives on addressing the space debris challenge.

The event was a remarkable experience, deepening attendees' understanding of space engineering and emphasizing collaboration. We were pleased to support in organizing this enriching event!

On the 17th of May, our Francesca Scala successfully defended her PhD thesis, “Multiple satellites formation flying for Earth observation applications in low Earth orbit”, at Politecnico di Milano.

Her research defines a mission design technique to enable future distributed multi-satellite systems for high-resolution interferometry. Furthermore, her work proposes a methodology for guidance, navigation and control algorithms for a fast and reliable simulation of the system performances. The significance of her study relies on the flexibility of the developed methodology, which can be applied to several multiple-spacecraft formation concepts, not only in the Earth observation field. Francesca was supervised by Prof. Camilla Colombo and Dr Gabriella Gaias, and her research was co-funded by the ERC COMPASS project and the ESA/ESTEC’s FFLAS mission concept study.
