9/11 25 Years Later: Critical Terrorism Perspectives – by Maria Alvanou
A quarter of a century has passed since the 11 September 2001 attacks, providing an opportunity to view the commemoration from a European perspective and with a critical approach. 9/11 gave terrorism a different social presence and changed security practices, transforming, in many ways, aspects of people's everyday lives. European countries already had considerable prior experience of various forms of terrorism, mainly separatist and far-left, with groups like the IRA, ETA, the Red Brigades, the Red Army Faction, November 17, etc. What changed, though, after September 11 was that the focus shifted to jihadist terrorists, and terrorism became a central organising principle of European security policy. So, this is an opportunity to ask some difficult but necessary questions regarding the security policy that followed 9/11 in Europe:
i. Can democracies compromise the rule of law in order to defend themselves?
ii. How successful was the “War on Terror” for Europe?
iii. Is jihadist terrorism the most dangerous?
iv. What does the concept of “radicalisation” really mean?
v. Is counter-terrorism a lucrative business?

Another transformation to watch. In recent months, ITSTIME has highlighted how Africa should no longer be regarded simply as one of the theatres of expansion of contemporary jihadism, but as one of the spaces in which some of its most significant transformations are taking place. Its operational center of gravity has shifted, the relative weight of different provinces has changed and, most importantly, the African mujahid has come to represent the purest and most complete example of the ideal jihadist.

A few days ago, the UK authorities issued a notice highlighting Russian espionage efforts targeting NATO personnel hosted in a hotel located in the German city of Wiesbaden. The guesthouse is close to the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) headquarters at the US Army’s Clay Kaserne military base, which is a key hub for coordinating military support and logistics assisting Ukraine’s defense forces against Russia.
