“C’è di mezzo il mare” was born from the 100 days of protest following the violent raids of October 1st, 2021, in Gargaresh, where over 5,000 migrants were arrested and detained in Libyan detention centers. From that mobilization emerged the Refugees in Libya movement, whose manifesto calls for the abolition of funding to the Libyan Coast Guard and the closure of detention centers, both supported by Italy and the EU. The renewal of the Italy-Libya Memorandum of Understanding on November 2nd, 2025, confirms a cooperation that overlooks human rights violations, perpetuating a system that contradicts Article 2 of the Italian Constitution: in Libya, those rights die.
🎤 With Eva Castelletti, Mahamat Daoud, and Abdul Rahman Abdul Qader Kelta, we explored the data, responsibilities, and critical issues of Italy-Libya cooperation: over €1.4 billion spent on border externalization, pushbacks in the Mediterranean, and a system that continues to ignore the fact that Libya is not a safe place.
