🇮🇹 Con la visita di Papa Leone XIV nella Terra dei Fuochi si ribadisce che questa non è una questione locale o marginale, ma una ferita nazionale che riguarda diritti fondamentali, verità e giustizia. La presenza del Pontefice assume il valore di un richiamo alle istituzioni, affinché finiscano omissioni, ritardi e negazioni e venga finalmente riconosciuto fino in fondo ciò che intere comunità hanno subito per decenni.
Papa Francesco aveva già indicato con chiarezza questa direzione con la Laudato si’, pubblicata nel 2015, denunciando il legame tra devastazione ambientale, interessi economici e ingiustizia sociale. Nello stesso periodo pubblicavamo con Paolo Chiariello Monnezza di stato. Le terre dei fuochi nell'Italia dei veleni, un lavoro nato per raccontare ciò che troppi continuavano a negare: lo smaltimento criminale dei rifiuti, l’avvelenamento di intere comunità e le responsabilità di una politica spesso negazionista, quando non direttamente collusa.
Ma questa denuncia viene da molto più lontano. Già tra la fine degli anni Sessanta e l’inizio degli anni Settanta, mio padre, il professore Polo scientifico internazionale Giovan Giacomo Giordano, pubblicava il Libro Bianco Ambiente e Salute in Campania, segnalando rischi, responsabilità e conseguenze che per decenni sono stati ignorati o minimizzati.
Negli anni successivi, il lavoro di denuncia e documentazione è proseguito anche attraverso Veritas, con l’obiettivo di raccogliere dati, testimonianze e prove su ciò che stava accadendo nei territori avvelenati. Un percorso che ha trovato un riconoscimento storico nella sentenza della CEDU sulla Terra dei Fuochi, che ha certificato le responsabilità dello Stato italiano per non aver tutelato il diritto alla vita e alla salute dei cittadini.
La Terra dei Fuochi non è stata un’emergenza improvvisa. È stata il risultato di anni di omissioni, interessi, convenienze e mancanza di verità. Oggi più che mai difendere la verità sui territori avvelenati significa difendere la dignità delle persone contro ogni forma di indifferenza istituzionale e criminale.

🇺🇸 With Pope Leo XIV's visit to the Land of Fires, it is reaffirmed that this is not a local or marginal issue, but a national wound that concerns fundamental rights, truth, and justice. The Pontiff's presence takes on the value of a call to the institutions, so that omissions, delays, and denials finally end and what entire communities have suffered for decades is finally fully recognized.
Pope Francis had already clearly indicated this direction with Laudato si', published in 2015, denouncing the link between environmental devastation, economic interests, and social injustice. At the same time, we published with Paolo Chiariello ‘Monnezza di Stato – The Land of Fires in the Italy of Poisons’ a work born to tell what too many continued to deny: the criminal disposal of waste, the poisoning of entire communities, and the responsibilities of a politics that was often denialist, if not directly complicit.
But this denunciation comes from much further back. Already between the late 1960s and the early 1970s, my father, Professor Giovan Giacomo Giordano, published the White Paper Environment and Health in Campania, highlighting risks, responsibilities, and consequences that were ignored or downplayed for decades.
In the following years, the work of denunciation and documentation continued also through Veritas, with the aim of collecting data, testimonies, and evidence about what was happening in the poisoned territories. A path that found historic recognition in the ECHR ruling on the Land of Fires, which certified the Italian State's responsibilities for failing to protect citizens' right to life and health.
The Land of Fires was not a sudden emergency. It was the result of years of omissions, interests, conveniences, and lack of truth.
Today more than ever, defending the truth about the poisoned territories means defending people's dignity against every form of institutional and criminal indifference.
