𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤! The first event will focus on one of the most pressing challenges of our time: 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰, one of the regions warming fastest on Earth.
Between 1979 and 2021, temperatures in the Arctic rose nearly four times faster than the global average. But how is this rapid warming changing the atmosphere? And what can clouds, water v***r and precipitation tell us about the processes shaping the Arctic climate?
The Svalbard archipelago, where temperatures have risen particularly sharply, offers a unique opportunity to investigate these questions. At the Ny-Ålesund Research Station, scientists have been monitoring the atmosphere continuously since 2016 using advanced radar and remote-sensing instruments. These technologies make it possible to observe how clouds form and evolve, how water v***r varies and how precipitation develops, including during extreme events.
Drawing on a decade of atmospheric observations, 𝗞𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹 (𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗲), will present key findings from this research and explore what they reveal about the rapidly changing Arctic climate.
