Model-based design of experiments for model discrimination (MBDoE-MD) is a powerful tool that can greatly accelerate the development of first-principles mathematical models. After a preliminary collection of experimental data, multiple model structures are typically proposed to describe the system under investigation and its underlying phenomena. By leveraging the model equations and values of the parameters, MBDoE-MD aims to design experiments that maximise information, facilitating the comparison between rival models and allowing the most appropriate model structure to be selected. Microalgae are becoming increasingly important in the bioeconomy and biotechnology sector as an attractive, sustainable source of value-added products. Thus, to develop feasible algae-based bioprocesses, it is crucial to study their intrinsic characteristics, such as their physiology, metabolism and their response to factors influencing their growth. Phycobilisomes are a structurally and functionally diverse family of light harvesting complexes, that binds open-chain tetrapyrroles known as bilins with the aim of absorbing photons and funneling excitation energy to photosystems, mainly photosystem II in cyanobacteria. The extreme variability in size, arrangement and absorbance profile deeply reflects the evolutionary adaptation of this family of antenna complexes to a number of ecological niches. The DigitAlgaesation project is approaching its conclusion. All Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) are at the end of their third year and most of them are finalising their Thesis to complete the Doctorate program. On 16th September 2024, a final workshop was held at the University of Padova to present the research outcomes of the fifteen ESRs. read more: https://digitalgaesation.eu/digitalgaesation-final-workshop/

Microalgal biofilm systems show multiple advantages over classical photobioreactors for biotechnological applications, such as lower water requirements and energy consumption. However, the high biomass densities reached at the most mature stages of the biofilm may limit light and nutrient availability. A better understanding of how the metabolic activity of the cells changes in such a different environment is needed to optimise biofilm-based systems for industrial applications. As one of the essential building blocks of life, nitrogen is often used to boost crop growth in agriculture. Common fertilizers therefore contain high nitrogen concentrations in the form of nitrate salts. The remaining drain waters from horticulture thereby still contain high levels of nitrate. Discarding such nitrate-rich drain waters into the environment can severely damage the natural balance of rivers by increasing toxicity for fish and invertebrates and causing algal blooms. Microalgae offer a sustainable alternative for producing high-value bioactive compounds, specifically antioxidant pigments. Lutein, a key carotenoid vital for diverse physiological functions, including light-mediated reactions, antioxidation, and ocular protection, provides significant clinical advantages. However, conventional extraction of lutein from marigold flowers poses challenges associated with resource-intensive cultivation, substantial land use, and complex processes.
