Un quadro a olio riferito a Domenico Induno: un esercizio di attribuzione

by Alberto Corvi

The article focuses on the recovery of an oil painting attributed to Domenico Induno (1815-1878). There is indeed a plaque affixed to the frame that ascribes the work to the painter although there are various elements that contrast with this declaration. The pictorial sensitivity, the way of treating the details, as well as the predilection for a certain subject rather than another, do not correspond to the traditional Induno. Therefore, the aim of this contribution is to examine in depth, as far as possible, the history of the object with the support of nineteenth-century sources, for the purpose of determining a new attribution. This research has also permitted to study the Manzonian subject of the painting by comparison, through iconographic affinity, with an engraving by Francesco Gonin (1808-1889) produced for the “Quarantana”. Finally, the article suggests some hypotheses regarding the painting’s original location, proposing an analysis of the lively context in which the work was born.

Falsi e pastiche. Considerazioni su un gruppo di legature “romaniche” del XIX secolo

by Alessia Marzo

This contribution is devoted to a group of book covers which either present a combination of authentic Romanesque elements with 19th century forgeries or can be considered complete forgeries. Close in shape and style, they can be attributed to the same counterfeiter or, alternatively, to several workshops which, in the decades around the middle of the 19th century, shared similar practices, tools, techniques and models.

Note su un falso cratere pestano nella collezione Rossi di Padova

by Alessandra Cannataro

The article begins with the analysis of a small red-figured bell krater, with scenes inspired by the world of theatre, coming from the archaeological collection of a physician from Padua, Mr Giovanni Rossi. In April 2012, his heirs reported the small bell-krater to the former Veneto Archaeological Superintendency. The aim of this work is, first of all, to highlight the inconsistency of certain technical, stylistic and iconographic elements of this object that confirm its inauthenticity, ascertained through laboratory analysis. The purpose is mainly to investigate the modus operandi of the forger, in order to cast light on the models from which he might have drawn inspiration, with no intention of producing a real copy, as well as to guess in which historical and cultural context the krater was made and for what potential buyers it was created.

Il carro della collezione Marchetti: analisi preliminare

by Daniele Zumerle

This paper deals with the analysis of a chariot of presumed Etruscan production, belonging to the Marchetti Collection, currently part of the MemO Project of the University of Padua. The study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of the authentication method applied in the Project: starting from the formal analysis, which involves the collection of measurements and technical aspects of similar artefacts in order to verify the differences, to the iconographic analysis, dealing with the coherence of the artefact’s figures within a precise chronological and geographical context. The integrated microscopic analysis also turns out to be significant, in particular for the recognition of the tools used in the manufacture of the artefact. On the basis of the data collected, it is possible to recognise the forger’s discreet skills and knowledge of the artefact which, in any case, are not adequate to reach the elaborate complexity of Etruscan chariots, investigated in detail in the last few years.

À propos d’un vrai-faux fragment de balustrade amarnienne

by Maxence Garde & Marta Valerio

This short article highlights a relief from an Amarna balustrade that was offered for sale by the HVMC in July 2020. After introducing the main aspects of these monuments mainly used in the new capital of Tell el Amarna, we will identify the genuine elements of this relief. The intriguing appearance of this piece will allow us to address the thorny issue of hybrid fakes in Egyptology, as well as that of the ties between forgers, antiquities dealers and Egyptologists throughout the 20th century.

Può Winckelmann dialogare con Authenticity?
by Maria Elisa Micheli

Authenticity, restoration and fake are some of the questions that Winckelmann indirectly asks himself in his study of ancient figurative productions. The answers, though partial and distorted, show the complexity of Winckelmann’s thought, which uses stylistic and formal categories as an instrument of investigation.

*For Fame or Fortune: Forgery of Archaeological and Palaeontological Artefacts*, by Noah Charney

Stimuli to forgery have been manifold throughout history. This paper offers insight into two of such stimuli that prove primary significance: money and ego.
It uses a series of case studies from the fields of archaeology and paleontology – namely, two religious relics, the Shroud of Turin and the James Ossuary, and two osteological remains, the Piltdown Man Skull and the Archaeoraptor Fossil – to expose the motivation and intention driving the mischievous acts in a comparative historical perspective. The paper also looks at the reception of these “discoveries” by the contemporary and later audiences, and how such a reception changed over time.
