Enrico, Marta, and Maria are in Alicante🇪🇸 for SRA-E 2026 – Advancing Risk Science for a Safer and Fairer Future. The conference brings together interdisciplinary perspectives to address risk, justice, and emerging societal challenges, offering a valuable space for new ideas and diverse viewpoints.
Our team presented - 🇮🇹🤌 in a truly Italian way 🤌🇮🇹 - research on:
Maria: how affective risk perception shapes public support for air pollution mitigation policies.
Enrico: how linking climate change to broader societal threats increases support for climate justice policies.
Marta: the psychological and risk-related mechanisms behind debt-loop behaviors under financial scarcity.

Maria: come la percezione affettiva del rischio influenzi il supporto pubblico verso le politiche di mitigazione dell’inquinamento atmosferico.
Enrico: come collegare il cambiamento climatico a minacce sociali più ampie aumenti il supporto verso le politiche di giustizia climatica.
Marta: sui meccanismi psicologici e legati alla percezione del rischio nei comportamenti di indebitamento in condizioni di scarsità economica.

[EN] As part of the “School Lunches” series from the Doctoral School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Padova, Maria presented her research on air pollution risk perception and public acceptance of mitigation policies. Drawing on studies conducted on the Italian population, she explored the psychological and ideological factors shaping support for environmental policies, including political identity, self-efficacy, perceived risk, affective polarization, and perceived policy costs. The discussion highlighted the central role of experiential and affective dimensions of risk perception in promoting support for mitigation policies, showing how emotionally engaging communication can increase policy acceptance across ideological groups. At the same time, the findings emphasized how political orientation and polarization continue to shape baseline environmental attitudes and responses to policy proposals.
Presenting the work developed over the last three years to peers and colleagues was a particularly meaningful moment, and a symbolic way to begin the final stage of her doctoral journey.

[IT] Nell’ambito della serie “School Lunches” della Scuola di Dottorato in Scienze Psicologiche dell’Università di Padova, Maria ha presentato la sua ricerca sulla percezione del rischio legato all’inquinamento atmosferico e sull’accettazione pubblica delle politiche di mitigazione. Partendo da studi condotti sulla popolazione italiana, ha approfondito i fattori psicologici e ideologici che influenzano il supporto alle politiche ambientali, tra cui identità politica, autoefficacia, percezione del rischio, polarizzazione affettiva e costi percepiti delle politiche. La discussione ha evidenziato il ruolo centrale delle dimensioni esperienziali e affettive della percezione del rischio nel promuovere il sostegno alle politiche di mitigazione, mostrando come una comunicazione capace di coinvolgere emotivamente possa aumentare l’accettazione delle politiche anche tra gruppi ideologicamente diversi. Allo stesso tempo, i risultati sottolineano come orientamento politico e polarizzazione continuino a influenzare atteggiamenti ambientali di base e risposte alle proposte politiche.
Presentare il lavoro sviluppato negli ultimi tre anni a colleghi e pari è stato un momento particolarmente significativo, oltre che un modo simbolico per iniziare la fase finale del percorso di dottorato.

[ENG] As part of the School Lunch Series—a seminar series in which third-year PhD students present their research to the academic community at the School of Psychology— our lab manager Alessandra presented the research conducted over the past three years in her PhD project through a multi-approach analysis of fashion consumption behaviors.

In her talk, titled Is Choosing the “Green” Alternative Necessarily the Most Sustainable Option? New Directions in the Study of Sustainable Fashion Behaviors, she examined a range of processes and intervention strategies, from circular economy practices to sufficiency-oriented approaches, with the overarching aim of reducing the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

[ITA ] Nell’ambito della School Lunch Series — un ciclo di seminari in cui gli studenti e le studentesse del terzo anno di dottorato presentano le proprie ricerche alla comunità accademica della Scuola di Psicologia — la nostra lab manager Alessandra ha presentato le ricerche condotte nel corso degli ultimi tre anni nell’ambito del suo progetto di dottorato, attraverso un’analisi multi-approccio dei comportamenti di consumo nel settore della moda.

Nel suo intervento, intitolato Is Choosing the “Green” Alternative Necessarily the Most Sustainable Option? [EN] Artificial intelligence promises efficiency, constant accessibility, and anonymity. Yet, when health and care are involved, people still prefer human contact. Two studies conducted across Italy, the UK, and Iran show that individuals are willing to pay more for services delivered by humans, particularly in healthcare. Preferences appear to depend not only on utility, but also on trust, emotional response, and cultural context.
These are some of the findings presented by Marta Caserotti during the Giornata sul Pensiero.

[ITA] L’intelligenza artificiale promette efficienza, accessibilità continua e anonimato. Eppure, quando entrano in gioco salute e cura, le persone continuano a preferire il contatto umano. Due studi condotti tra Italia, Regno Unito e Iran mostrano che gli individui sono disposti a pagare di più per servizi erogati da esseri umani, soprattutto in ambito sanitario. La preferenza non dipende solo dall’utilità del servizio, ma anche da fiducia, risposta emotiva e contesto culturale.

Did you know that being worried about air pollution is not enough to act against it?

📈 Insights from our recent study show that when we perceive mitigation policies as too costly, we are less willing to support them. Quite understandable, right?

But what if we truly believe we can act against air pollution (i.e., we have high self-efficacy to do so)?

We don't consider costs anymore! People with high self-efficacy to act against air pollution are willing to accept mitigation policies regardless of their perceived costs, while individuals who feel less capable of acting against air pollution are more susceptible to the levels of perceived costs of policies.

These findings, together with other insights from our research, were presented by Maria Stocco at the Giornata del Pensiero 2026.

Lo sapevate che preoccuparsi per l’inquinamento atmosferico non basta per agire contro di esso?
📈 I risultati del nostro recente studio mostrano che, quando percepiamo le politiche di mitigazione come troppo costose, siamo meno propensi a sostenerle. Abbastanza comprensibile, no?

Ma cosa succede quando crediamo davvero di poter fare qualcosa contro l’inquinamento atmosferico (ovvero, quando abbiamo un alto senso di autoefficacia)? In quel caso, i costi percepiti passano in secondo piano. Le persone con un’elevata autoefficacia sono disposte ad accettare politiche di mitigazione indipendentemente dai costi percepiti, mentre chi si sente meno capace di agire contro l’inquinamento è più influenzato dal livello di costo attribuito alle politiche.
Questi risultati, insieme ad altri spunti emersi dalla nostra ricerca, sono stati presentati da Maria Stocco alla Giornata del Pensiero 2026.

💡 What do we mean when we speak about empathy? Yesterday, we tried to answer that question during the distinguished lecture by Prof. Sara Hodges from the University of Oregon, a long-standing friend of our lab.

Professor Hodges spoke about the different constructs of empathy and the efforts to split and lump various views on the topic. These definitions were developed by an international group of researchers over five years.

Other than the lecture, we had a very nice time with Sara, enjoying coffee, pasta, aperitivo, and even the views of the Dolomites. Thanks again Prof Sara Hodges, and hope to host you again soon.

La Prof.ssa Hodges ha parlato dei diversi costrutti dell’empatia e dei tentativi di distinguere e integrare le molteplici prospettive sul tema. Queste definizioni sono state sviluppate da un gruppo internazionale di ricercatori nel corso di cinque anni.

💡 What does it mean to think in 2026?
This week, some of our JDM LAB members headed to Trieste for the Thinking Day — two packed days of talks spanning probabilistic reasoning, moral judgment, cognitive biases, and the future of human-AI interaction.
And we didn't just attend — we contributed! Marta Caserotti presented on Digital Revolution: Opportunities and Challenges 💻 and Maria Stocco on Risk Perception and Polarization in the Acceptance of Air Pollution Policies 🌍, two topics that couldn't be more relevant right now.
It was a great opportunity to connect with researchers from across the field and come back with fresh ideas and new energy.

🧠 🌍 How do we make sustainable choices in an uncertain world?
On Thursday, May 7th at 4:30 PM, Prof. Enrico Rubaltelli will be speaking at "Balancing decisions: sustainable choices in an uncertain world", an event hosted as part of the ASviS Sustainable Development Festival.
His talk, "A connected world: risk perception and the impact of the climate crisis on society", will explore how perceiving climate change as a threat multiplier, one that amplifies risks across health, the economy, and society, can increase support for climate policies and green technology investment. But there is a fascinating twist: the same perception that drives action can also make people more vulnerable to climate misinformation.
The event will close with a roundtable featuring sustainability organizations, followed by an aperitivo. 🥂

Giovedì 7 maggio alle 16:30, il Prof. Enrico Rubaltelli interverrà a "Decisioni in equilibrio: scelte sostenibili in un mondo incerto", un evento ospitato nell'ambito del Festival dello Sviluppo Sostenibile di ASviS.
Il suo intervento, "Un mondo connesso: percezione del rischio e impatto della crisi climatica sulla società", esplorerà come la percezione del cambiamento climatico come un moltiplicatore di minacce, capace di amplificare i rischi per la salute, l'economia e la società, possa aumentare il supporto alle politiche climatiche e agli investimenti in tecnologie green. Ma c'è un risvolto affascinante: la stessa percezione che spinge all'azione può anche rendere le persone più vulnerabili alla disinformazione sul clima.
