AH 349: Between the Lily and the Lion visited the Sala dei Giganti in Padua, and it was such an incredible find! The massive frescoes, filled with Roman emperors and classical imagery, reflect the city’s rediscovery of the ancient world in the sixteenth century. The scale and use of portraiture bring out a strong sense of civic pride, intellectual life, and political ambition.

We had such a wonderful weekend spending our time together as a program in Florence and San Gimignano! Together, we visited the Uffizi Galleries with a special thanks to Professor Petrioli who teaches AH 349: Between the Lily and the Lion, who was such an amazing guide to all of us! He also gave us an amazing walking informational tour of Florence as well. Another big thank you to our tour guide in San Gimignano, who showed as all around the beautiful town. We saw incredible views, and learned about this historic center as well. What a great last program trip!⛰️🌟🌻🍦

Students in AH 349 Between the Lion and the Lily visited the Scuola del Santo, where frescoes, including early works by Titian, bring Saint Anthony’s story to life!

We each chose a fresco, created our own presentations, and shared them with the class, making it an interactive and engaging experience. Professor Petrioli then added deeper insight to each piece, showing how visual culture shaped popular piety and institutional identity in Renaissance Padua.

LI130 Introduction to Italian Language and Culture:

As part of the BIP program, they took learning beyond the classroom with an Italian language scavenger hunt through Padua’s city center, all centered around the iconic Caffè Pedrocchi. By interacting with locals and navigating the city in Italian, students learned pieces of Padua’s history in a hands on way. It was such a fun and immersive experience that pushed them to step outside their comfort zones, practice the language in real time, and see the city from a whole new perspective.

The CAS HI 263 Conflicts, Protests & Terrorism: An Italian History class visited the villa where the Armistice of Villa Giusti was signed on November 3, 1918, ending the fighting between Italy and Austria Hungary on the Italian Front of World War I. After two intense days of negotiations in these very rooms, the agreement brought the war on this front to a close.

The villa is still privately owned by the same family, who preserve the historic photographs with the current ones, keeping the past and present under the same roof.

Business Internship Program and Italian & European Studies Program students had the opportunity to see “Mirandolina” at Teatro Verdi in Padova, a classic by Carlo Goldoni brought to life in a way that felt both thoughtful and insightful.

The story highlights a strong and witty female lead navigating power, independence, and social expectations, themes that still resonate today. It was such a meaningful way to experience Italian culture through live theater together!

Students in CAS IR 334 European Politics and Policy Challenges: Italy and the United States had the opportunity to explore key sites of democracy in Padua!

At Palazzo Moroni, we saw where local government operates and heard from Councilor Francesca Benciolini about how the city is run.

In Piazza della Frutta, we visited a plaque honoring Enrico Berlinguer, a major figure in post-war Italian politics.

On Via Zabarella, we stood outside the former headquarters of the Movimento Sociale Italiano, marked by the 1974 Red Brigades attack.

Overall, the visit showed how Padua’s urban space reflects institutions, political memory, and historical conflict.

IES student explored the Portello neighborhood in Padua, where student life truly thrives, and the vibrant streets and the heart of university culture is all around us.

On our walk, we also visited a city kitchen, Cucine Economiche Popolari, an institution in Padua where we will partner for Global Days of Service in April so we can give back to the community that has become our home for the semester.

Those of us taking classes at the University of Padua also got to see the location of our buildings, specifically those of us who are taking international relation classes, economics, environmental science, and psychology classes. We are very grateful for the opportunity to study and learn in these spaces abroad!

As part of our QST IM471 Made in Italy: Excellence of Bello, Buono, e Ben Fatto course, we had the opportunity to take part in an onsite class at Manifattura Veneta in Quinto Vicentino.

During the visit, we saw how an Italian manufacturing company operates while staying deeply connected to regional craftsmanship and quality production. We toured the full production process of suit jackets and got to see the incredible attention to detail and care that goes into each step behind the scenes.

What makes Manifattura Veneta especially impressive is that 100% of the production process takes place there, allowing them to maintain exceptional control over quality and craftsmanship. The company was founded more than 30 years ago and collaborates with several well known luxury fashion brands, highlighting the high level of expertise and production that takes place within the company.

Experiences like this are what make studying abroad in Padova so unique. Learning directly from companies that represent the excellence of Made in Italy truly brings our coursework to life.

Thank you to Professor Ciappei and the team at Manifattura Veneta for welcoming us and sharing their work and perspective!
