Today is the World Awareness Day, organized to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) throughout the world. Despite several research works, is still a debated subject in all the involved fields, ranging from medicine to socio-psychology. In this context, computer science and systems engineering come in help to improve the quality of life of people with ASD in their everyday activities.
It is thus the perfect circumstance to proudly present the paper we had accepted for presentation at Pervasive Displays 2019, titled "Touch or Touchless? Evaluating Usability of Interactive Displays for Persons with Autistic Spectrum Disorders".
In this work, we present a comparison study aimed at understanding the difference in terms of usability, effectiveness, and enjoyment perceived by users with ASD between two interaction modalities usually supported by interactive displays: touch-based and touchless gestural interaction.
The paper is the result of joint work with our colleagues Stefania Serafin and Ali Adjorlu of Aalborg Universitet , and Davide Rocchesso of Università degli Studi di Palermo.
It is part of our ongoing work on usable interfaces for people with ASD, which is a consequence of our willingness to give a small contribution to better understand ASD and to improve the quality of life of people who suffers from it. The paper follows our previous work that we presented as a poster at the last edition of PerDis, titled "Exploring Usability and Accessibility of Avatar-based Touchless Gestural Interfaces for Autistic People".
