La promozione dello sviluppo umano, sociale ed economico dei paesi del Sud del mondo e il rispetto dei diritti umani sono principi ispiratori del Centro. Operiamo al fine di individuare, valorizzare e coordinare le risorse tecniche e scientifiche presenti nell’Ateneo di Parma che si rendano disponibili a tradurre questi principi in obiettivi pratici e a perse

guirli. Allo stesso scopo promuoviamo le relazioni tra l’Ateneo e i soggetti istituzionali, economici e della società civile che condividono le stesse finalità e che vogliono impegnarsi nella realizzazione di iniziative concrete e nell’attivazione di progetti comuni. La specificità del Centro è essere emanazione diretta dell’Università di Parma, delle persone che vi operano, dei dipartimenti che la costituiscono e come tale ha come obiettivi, oltre alla promozione e realizzazione di interventi operativi, l’elaborazione e l’attuazione di progetti di ricerca interdisciplinari e di iniziative sperimentali finalizzate a migliorare le conoscenze sulle condizioni che favoriscono lo sviluppo umano e sociale nei contesti ad elevata povertà.

🌍 “This programme brings together experts and learners to create something truly impactful.”

Fiseha Bekele Teshome, an environmentalist and participant at the ACHIEVE-IT Summer School, joined the training to gain hands-on knowledge in clean and affordable energy solutions.

He found the combination of theoretical lessons and practical training especially valuable — with fieldwork and lab sessions offering real-world applications.

💡 “Energy is not just about technology, but also about ensuring its environmental friendliness. This course covers all aspects, from solar energy to the environmental impact of materials.”

Teshome also emphasized the urgent need for renewable energy in Africa, where energy poverty affects all sectors. He believes awareness and practical solutions are key to transition.

🌍 “Collaboration and skill development were the key takeaways for me.”

Dr. Lutendo Muremi, a PhD in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Johannesburg, joined the ACHIEVE-IT Summer School to explore solar technology.

The interdisciplinary collaboration stood out to her, as experts from physics, engineering, and environmental science shared knowledge, particularly in solar cell design and real-world applications.

💡 “I’ve learned how solar cells work, from material design to practical simulations.”

The hands-on experience at the solar site was a highlight, where she saw the conversion of energy and its practical applications.

𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲–𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄-𝐈𝐓 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 (𝟏𝟗–𝟐𝟏 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡)

From 19 to 21 March 2026, the final event of the PNRR-TNE project ACHIEVE-IT – Academic Collaboration through Higher International Education for a Viable and Equitable Africa with Italy took place at the University of Salento, dedicated to presenting the results of activities carried out within the framework of academic cooperation between Italy and Africa.

The conference opened with institutional greetings by 𝐅𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐨 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞, Former Rector of the University of Salento; 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐢, Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS); and 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐳𝐳𝐨𝐥𝐚, senior official of the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR), highlighting the strategic relevance of the initiative within the broader framework of Italy–Africa academic and scientific cooperation policies.

The project was led by the Università degli studi di Parma as coordinator of an international network promoted by the 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐂𝐔𝐂𝐈) involving 7 Italian universities, partners in 16 countries, and 37 African institutions.

Representing the University of Parma at the event were Simone Baglioni, Vice-Rector for Teaching; 𝐍𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢, Project Coordinator; 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐨, Director of CUCI; and CUCI project managers 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐢 and 𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢.

The ACHIEVE-IT project aimed to strengthen academic cooperation between Italy and Africa through the development of structured, long-term partnerships based on reciprocity, inclusion, and sustainability, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. Key areas of intervention included academic mobility, joint study programmes, co-supervised doctoral pathways, collaborative research activities, and advanced training programmes.

🌍 “This course is a shift from polluting energy to clean and affordable energy.”

Dr. Degisew Bayih Fetene, lecturer in Environmental Science at Hawassa University, Ethiopia, joined the ACHIEVE-IT Summer School to deepen his knowledge of clean and affordable energy solutions.

His key takeaway? The importance of community education in promoting renewable energy.

💡 “Education plays a crucial role in raising awareness and teaching communities how to install, maintain, and use clean energy.”

Dr. Fetene plans to integrate these insights into his teaching and help improve energy access in his home country.

📍Final Meeting – ACHIEVE-IT Project | Lecce

Il progetto ACHIEVE-IT giunge alla sua fase conclusiva con il meeting finale a Lecce,un momento importante di confronto tra università e partner internazionali.

Durante il progetto sono state realizzate numerose attività di scambio accademico, mobilità di docenti e ricercatori, e collaborazione scientifica tra istituzioni europee e africane, con l’obiettivo di rafforzare la cooperazione tra sistemi di istruzione superiore e promuovere la condivisione di conoscenze.

📍 ACHIEVE-IT Final Meeting | Lecce

The ACHIEVE-IT project reaches its final stage with the Final Meeting in Lecce, an important opportunity for dialogue and exchange among universities and international partners.

Throughout the project, several activities were carried out, including academic exchanges, mobility of professors and researchers, and scientific collaboration between European and African institutions, with the aim of strengthening cooperation between Higher Education systems and promoting knowledge sharing.

🌍 “Synergy is the key — bringing together different minds and energies to make progress in renewable energy.”

Dr. Alle Dioum, Associate Professor and Senior Researcher from Senegal, specializes in renewable energy and photovoltaic technologies. He joined the ACHIEVE-IT Summer School to expand his knowledge in energy solutions and AI integration.

He appreciated the programme’s interdisciplinary approach, combining theory with practical insights on energy challenges.

💡 “The next step is integrating AI into energy system design, especially for developing countries facing urgent energy issues.”

Dr. Dioum plans to apply these insights in teaching and research at the Sustainable Engineering Water and Energy Institute.
