📝 What’s inside?
AA research developed over the last 25 years in different high mountain areas of the Pyrenees has confirmed continuous human occupation of these areas over time. Of the various economic activities carried out in these areas, livestock farming is particularly notable. Thanks to extensive excavations, the daily activities that sustained and promoted the well-being of the area’s inhabitants are increasingly well documented. Notably, the collection and use of fuel for households sheds light on the relationships that societies established with their environment. In this diachronic, regional-scope study, we have unified all available anthracological records for dwelling sites in the southern Central Pyrenees dating from the 9th millennium BCE in a single database. A total of 34 taxa have been identified, although only a few were probably used as the main fuel. Changes and continuities detected over time are related to both the altitude of the site and the historical dynamics of land use in the area.

📝 What’s inside?
After 20 years of archaeological surveys and excavations, the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park is one of the high mountain areas with the most extensive archaeological record in the Pyrenees. This work presents a database of 124 radiocarbon dates that allow a total of 380 documented sites to be placed in chronological sequence. Along with the data, some analyses are proposed to evaluate trends in the expansion and contraction of the number of documented contexts throughout the Holocene. A brief analysis of the temporal variation of the different types of contexts is also provided.

🪨Have you ever stopped to pick up a cool rock? It's not a coincidence, humans and stone are in a very antique and complex relationship!

On May 14-15, the 3rd IRAAR Conference 'Quarries and rock-cut sites through the lens of archaeology' will take place in Edinburgh, exploring these multifaceted relations through an archaeological lens on quarrying, rock-cut architecture/site, and rock art. By addressing challenges of extraction, technological adaptation, and symbolic and practical engagements with rock, as well as heritage and recent research, the event fosters interdisciplinary dialogue on the transformation of rocky landscapes across time and space.

✨ Marialucia Amadio, Stefano Genovesi, Giulia Picchi, and Claudia Sciuto will present a contribution discussing the constant transformation of Carrara's landscape, where extraction continuously erases and rewrites traces of the past: their integrated geoarchaeological approach investigate these highly reworked contexts, where stratigraphic continuity is often fragmented or absent-

"Tracing stability in a moving landscape: geoarchaeology of quarrying in the Carrara marble basin (Italy)". Claudia Sciuto (MAPPALab), with Marialucia Amadio (University of Siena), Stefano Genovesi (Director of the Carrara Marble Museum) and Giulia Picchi (Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Lucca and Massa Carrara).

Che storie raccontano terra, argilla, fuoco e microtracce? 🔥

“Making Relations” è un invito a entrare in contatto con la materia, a cercare nei dettagli e nelle tecniche le tracce di relazioni invisibili tra umani, oggetti e processi.

Great participation from MAPPA Lab at the past !

The MAPPA team contributed with 6 presentations, 1 organized session, and 3 posters. We’re especially proud of receiving a special mention for the nick Ryan Bursary, awarded to Martina. A big thank you to everyone involved, this was a fantastic opportunity to share our work, connect with the community, and receive valuable feedback.

Looking forward to building on this experience and continuing the conversation!

🇬🇧 What happens when archaeology meets robotics?

AUTOMATA project will be featured at the 2nd Workshop on e-Heritage and Robotics 2026, part of IEEE ICRA 2026 in Vienna: the world’s leading conference in robotics.

Gabriele Gattiglia has been invited with a contribution titled “Ἐγώ, αὐτόματη (I, AUTOMATA)”, exploring the project and the use of robotic tools for advanced digitalisation of prehistoric ceramics and lithics. A new way of looking at how robotics, and its potential for the archaeological research.

Come and meet us on June 5!
