🌍 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄

With ultrasonic recorders, we can document the presence and activity of bats, entering their world “on tiptoe”. However, not all species can be classified equally well from the ultrasounds they emit, and it is common practice to group species with similar echolocation calls into categories known as 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀. This is a wise and cautious approach, but it entails interpretative problems. One concerns the assessment of 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, that is, how many species occur in each place. To estimate the magnitude of this problem, Mirjam Knörnschild and I joined forces with talented mathematicians in my department and developed models to quantify the error. We also provide a 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 that helps determine the extent of the error in our assessments.

🦇 𝗡𝘂𝗼𝘃𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼: 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗼 𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗲 “𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱”?

🦇 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 “𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀”, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿?

Some bats hunt in flight, while others glean prey from surfaces. They may fly in open spaces, move through dense vegetation, or forage just above the water surface. They very often feed on insects, but many species eat fruit, nectar, other vertebrates, including fish, or even blood, and use a variety of habitats and roosts. 🌿🌙

In our new paper in 𝗠𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄, developed through an international collaboration between 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻, 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝘂𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗴 🌍🤝, we reviewed hundreds of studies to understand how ecologists use “𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀”, that is, groups of species that exploit similar resources in similar ways.

Our work aimed to clarify a conceptually complex field and improve our understanding of the 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 of different species. 🧭🦇🌱

🇮🇹 Nuovo articolo dal nostro lab AnEcoEvo! 🦇✨

È appena uscito su Science of the Total Environment il nostro studio sugli effetti della luce artificiale notturna sui pipistrelli in ambienti urbani e naturali 🌃🌲

🇬🇧 New article from our lab AnEcoEvo! 🦇✨

Our study on the effects of artificial light at night on bats in urban and natural woodlands has just been published in Science of the Total Environment 🌃🌲

Working in Italy and Montenegro, we showed that "context matters": the species most sensitive to light reduce their activity more strongly in naturally dark woodlands than they do in urban parks chronically exposed to artificial lighting 💡🌙

This does not mean that light is harmless in cities. On the contrary, urban lighting may have already selected more tolerant communities, with important ecological implications ⚠️🌍

NUOVO ARTICOLO TARGATO AnEcoEvo!

NEW AnEcoEvo PAPER ALERT!

🌍🦇 Climate change is pushing species to shift upslope. In the bat Myotis daubentonii, females colonising the cold edge of the range adopt a clear strategy: they temporally partition foraging activity to reduce competition and optimise limited resources. Behavioural plasticity supporting colonisation of suboptimal habitats. 🌿❄️

Thanks to the Abruzzo Lazio and Molise National Park for their constant support!
