🎉 25 YEARS OF MONASH PRATO! 🎉

A quarter of a century ago, Monash University opened its doors here in Prato, creating a unique bridge between Australia and Italy. This year, we are incredibly proud to celebrate our 25th Anniversary!

The Monash Prato campus has become a vibrant hub of education, groundbreaking research, and cultural exchange. But most importantly, it has been a home to an incredible community.

To our wonderful local Pratese community who welcomed us with open arms, the brilliant researchers and artists who have shared their work here, and the thousands of students whose lives have been transformed by their time in Tuscany, and who in turn have helped make us what we are today: grazie di cuore ❤️

📢 To celebrate this milestone, join us on campus on 17 September 2026 for a special Open Day filled with activities.

Current status: collecting inspiration in Italy 🛵 🎨 ✨
This week, we're delighted to welcome our Module 10 students to the Prato campus!
Students of Global Design Studio and Design Strategy along with the Professional Practice unit will immerse themselves in Italy's rich design culture while exploring how design can respond to global challenges.
Throughout the module, they'll collaborate across design disciplines, engage with local communities and stakeholders, such as Centro Pecci and taking part in a workshop held at Lottozero, and experiment with methods such as mapping, visual storytelling and prototyping,
We can't wait to see the ideas, creativity and collaborations that will emerge over the coming weeks as students embrace new inspiration.
Benvenuti a Prato, and enjoy your international design journey! ✈️🎨

In July, students of our Drawing in Italy unit had the opportunity to take part in a truly enriching experience thanks to a Monash University - Università di Padova collaboration, “Knowing the Body - An Art-Medicine collaboration in anatomy and drawing”.

From life drawing classes guided by professor Amelie Scalercio, to a memorable day excursion with medical students exploring one of Italy's most beautiful cities, Padua, this experience was all about creativity, learning and cultural exchange.

Highlights included visits to the breathtaking Scrovegni Chapel and University of Padua’s historical classrooms, made even more special thanks to our exceptional guides, the Padua’s students and Professor Alberto Zanatta, whom we warmly thank for sharing their knowledge, passion and hospitality.

We look forward to repeating this wonderful experience in the future! 💙

A throwback to the past few months!
During Modules 5 and 7, our Law semester students had the opportunity to engage with the local Prato community through volunteering activities with Associazione Giorgio La Pira and Oratorio Sant'Anna.
From helping prepare meals and wash dishes at the local soup kitchen 🍽️ to spending afternoons with primary and middle school children, lending a hand with homework (or, more often, playing football, volleyball and basketball!), our students experienced a different side of everyday life in Italy.
For some, it was a chance to learn more about the Italian school system and the daily routines of local children. For others, it was about connecting with volunteers and making a meaningful contribution to the local community, even in a small way 💙
A special thank you to our student volunteers and to staff at Associazione Giorgio La Pira and Oratorio Sant'Anna for welcoming them!

🌍 We’re extremely proud to share this story about Monash alumna Professor Helena Teede and the landmark global work she led, resulting in the renaming of PCOS to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), a condition affecting more than 170 million women worldwide.
This is a powerful example of how research and global collaboration can drive meaningful change. 💜
We are especially delighted to see Monash Prato recognised as a pivotal space in Professor Teede's journey, where many of the relationships behind this work were forged and strengthened.

🎓 POV: you came to Italy for one global campus module, and find yourself at the Prato campus developing intercultural skills and discussing Europe, pharmacy, business and contemporary art with students from Monash's international campus network across Australia, Malaysia and Italy 👀

Module 8 has officially wrapped! ✨

Over the past few weeks, our students have been busy exploring what Europe really means, how business works in contemporary Italy, the future of pharmacy and healthcare, and the world of art, drawing and exhibition-making. Some students were also fortunate to take part in a unique Alumni-Student Mentoring Session at which they were able to network with former Monash alumni, leaders in their respective fields of expertise, to learn more about their career pathways and experiences 🎨🏛️

Grazie mille a tutti, e a presto! ✨

Last Monday we celebrated the incredible work of Lauren Brincat, our 2026 Artist in Residence, marking the conclusion of her three month residency with our annual Visual Residency Night. 🎨🖌️

Lauren’s residency project explored fabric as a medium of memory, resistance and transformation. While textiles have long been present in her practice, this residency marked a deeper engagement with the material and its histories.
Working in Prato allowed her to connect with the labour and migration stories embedded in the city’s textile industry. During her time in Prato, Lauren collaborated with local textile businesses, including O.B. Stock, and creative laboratories such as Lottozero, engaging with the people, materials and processes that shape the city’s textile heritage.

Through Prato’s textile traditions, local collaborations, and personal histories of migration and labour, Textile Acts, Lauren's new body of work undertaken here in Prato, unfolds as a site-responsive exploration of how cloth can carry memory, movement and meaning across generations and geographies.

Grazie a tutti coloro che hanno partecipato!

📚 What does it take to lead in a global world?

Our Intercultural Skills for Global Leaders unit is designed to equip students with the global leadership skills needed to confidently engage in international networks and diverse professional environments 🌍
Through guided intercultural interactions inside and outside the classroom, students explored Prato's Macrolotto Zero area, a former industrial textile district turned multicultural area, strongly influenced by the Chinese community and now the focus of major urban renewal efforts in Prato, where they reflected on their own cultural perspectives through structured self-reflection and real-world experiences.
The unit also welcomed guest speakers from Italian universities and research institutions, including Andrea Del Bono from the University of Bergamo, Mengmeng Luo, PhD Researcher in Social Sciences for Sustainability and Wellbeing at the University of Florence, and Fabio Bracci, sociologist and IRIS researcher.
Through their insights, students explored the evolution of Prato, its key social and economic characteristics, and the connections between the local context and Chinese migration.
Key words: cross-cultural collaboration 🤝, teamwork 👥, cultural awareness 🌐, and critical thinking 🧠

🌍What does it really mean to do business in Europe?

Over three intensive weeks, our European Business and Society students have been exploring the political, economic and social realities shaping business across Italy and Europe.
And they didn't just learn in the classroom about the local business environment, they took to the streets of Prato to meet local businesses involved in our initiative and to hear first-hand about the opportunities and challenges they face today 🤝
From local conversations to insights from Piacenti Spa about operating in a specialised sector, students connected theory with the realities of doing business in contemporary Italy.
A real-world learning experience in the heart of Italy ✨
