The final stages of a Floor Mosaic class - and one of our favorite moments of the week!
At the end of the course, part of the work moves outdoors, where students complete the final stages of their mosaics under Luciana's guidance.
The subjects you see here are typical examples of the kind of designs that can be created during the course: geometric patterns, fish, fruit and other motifs inspired by the extraordinarily rich tradition of ancient Roman floor mosaics.
Roman mosaic floors were made to last. Using tesserae of marble and other durable stones, Roman craftsmen created pavements that were walked on every day - and yet many of them have survived for almost two thousand years.
There is something very special about learning a technique with such a long history, using your hands much as mosaicists did centuries ago.
And, of course, every student leaves with their own mosaic. 😊
