The Institute for Ecumenical Studies "Œcumenicum" of the Angelicum is a specialised institute of the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of St.

Thomas Aquinas. Inaugurated on 23 October 2019, the Institute for Ecumenical Studies of the Angelicum is placed under the patronage of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity. It is the only Institute of Ecumenical Studies in Rome. The Institute offers a complete university education in ecumenism for clergy, religious and laity preparing to become teachers on ecumenism, ecumenical officers, or requiring ongoing ecumenical formation. The Institute also promotes theological research through the direction of post-doctoral theses and the organization of research seminars and public conferences. The Institute builds upon the legacy of a long tradition of ecumenical studies within the Dominican Order and the presence of pioneers of Christian unity such as Cardinal Willebrands, Fr. Yves Congar, and Fr. Jean-Marie Tillard.

L'Ufficio Nazionale per l'Ecumenismo e il Dialogo Interreligioso della Conferenza Episcopale Italiana (CEI) sulla conferenza accademica di venerdì 23 ottobre "Crete Ten Years After", organizzata dall'Istituto di Studi Ecumenici dell'Angelicum.

Un evento per riflettere sulla visione del Concilio rispetto alla missione della Chiesa ortodossa e sul suo significato per il dialogo ecumenico e la vita della Chiesa.

📢 Academic Conference | Crete Ten Years After

The Institute for Ecumenical Studies (Œcumenicum) of the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas – Angelicum is pleased to invite you to the international academic conference:

“Crete Ten Years After. A Conference Marking the 10th Anniversary of the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church”

📅 23 October 2026
📍 Aula Minor – Angelicum, Rome

The conference will bring together distinguished Orthodox and Catholic scholars and representatives to reflect on the theological, canonical and ecumenical significance of the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church, ten years after its celebration.

A special highlight will be the address by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at 10:30 AM, on the occasion of the conferral of an Honorary Doctorate in Theology by the Angelicum.

The afternoon sessions, beginning at 2:00 PM, will explore the Council's documents, its reception within the Church, and its contribution to ecumenical dialogue.

📸 Al via il Diploma “Ut Unum Sint” – Formazione Continua in Ecumenismo!

Venerdì 16 ottobre si è tenuto presso l’Angelicum il primo incontro del Diploma “Ut Unum Sint”, promosso dall’Istituto di Studi Ecumenici.

La prima giornata, dedicata al tema “Il movimento ecumenico”, ha visto la lezione della Prof.ssa Teresa Francesca Rossi e il workshop del Prof. Andrzej Choromański sulla Commissione “Fede e Costituzione” del Consiglio Mondiale delle Chiese.

Un primo momento di formazione, approfondimento e dialogo nel cammino verso l’unità dei cristiani.

The Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas – Angelicum is pleased to announce that, on 23 October 2026, it will confer an Honorary Doctorate in Theology to His All-Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

The Ecumenical Patriarch will attend the University for the Opening of the 2026–2027 Academic Year, during which the honorary degree will be conferred.

His Eminence Cardinal Kurt Koch, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, will deliver a laudatio, followed by an acceptance lecture by the Ecumenical Patriarch.

The initiative is promoted by the Œcumenicum – Institute for Ecumenical Studies of the Angelicum.

Session 6 | Synodal Institutions and Processes in the Eastern Churches
The conference continued with a focused exploration of synodal institutions and processes according to the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, bringing together perspectives on institutions, canonical processes and Latin Church learning.

🔹 Processes: Rev. Prof. Sunny Kokk aravalayil, S.J., Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome
🔹 Latin learnings: Prof. Astrid Kaptijn, University of Fribourg, Switzerland

The session concluded with Q&A and further reflection on the canonical structures and processes that shape synodal life in the Eastern Churches.
