ROMAN FUNERARY ARCHAEOLOGY RESEACH PROJECT PRACTICAL TRAINING PROGRAM INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION PROJECT FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF LEARNING AND TEACHING
This successful and innovative program taught participants new techniques in funeral archaeology through on-site practic

al training. This international educational innovation programme, aimed at teachers, undergraduate and post-graduate students in Ancient History, Archaeology and Anthropology
The Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali of will be undertaking the first season of the bioarcheology research project of Via Ostiense Necropolis at Rome. A thorough and exhaustive micro-excavation of the remains deposited inside the urns will be carried out in situ. The project is twofold, and first aims to identify the physical characteristics of the cremated individuals. This allows us to develop their biological profile as well as infer the conditions of their life and death and interpret the funerary rituals. In addition, the project gives the opportunity to students and professionals to train in the anthropological study of cremations and the Roman funerary world. At its core, this is a multidisciplinary project aimed at analyzing each and every one of the materials deposited inside cremation pots and urns: human remains, animal and plant remains from the funeral banquet, objects such as lintels or ointment pots, coins, seeds of the vegetable offerings, the funeral bed, all in order to be able to reconstruct the gestures and behaviors of the Roman community. The project consists of the excavation in situ of the cremation urns and the study and analysis of the remains which they contain, particularly the burned human bones. With a large number of undisturbed urns, the necropolis of Via Ostiense is a privileged place for the study of the rites of death and the interpretation of the gestures and customs of the Roman civilization. In particular, the extraordinary state of preservation of the cremations, all intact, in situ, inside the containers represents a unique opportunity, for the bio-anthropological and archaeological study applying a method that allows an optimum analysis of the human remains, of the conditions of life and customs and funeral rituals.
