Hybrid workshop session DesignMatters | Diversity in PhD: good practices and open resources for the PhD research and supervision journey
Wednesday 6 May, 17:30-19:30 Athens time / 16:30-18:30 Central European time
Cumulus Athens conference and online: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82085816162

Aimed at PhD students and supervisors, this workshop shares the resources and tools born within the Erasmus+ project “DesignMatters: Nurturing Inclusive and Innovative Design Research”. Developed in partnership with Cumulus, the project aims at promoting inclusion, diversity, and innovation in doctoral education in Design.
During the workshop, after a brief introduction of DesingMatters training modules focused on various dimensions of diversity, participants will practice hands-on how to apply these principles to their own PhD research or PhD supervision through the PhD Journey Map tool.
The aim is to empower doctoral students with a deeper understanding of how to include diverse perspectives in their research, while enabling supervisors to tackle inequalities that may exclude disadvantaged PhD students and hinder their scientific outputs.
Through fostering collaboration among academia, civil society, and local communities, the initiative seeks to bridge academic research with real-world needs.

On 13 October 2025, at Sapienza University of Rome and online, we held the DesignMatters conference, which explored the theme of inclusion and diversity in research and practice, with particular attention on doctoral education in design.

After the greetings by conference chair Viktor Malakuczi, SDR director Loredana Di Lucchio and Cumulus president Lorenzo Imbesi, we started by presenting the Erasmus+ project “DesignMatters: Nurturing Inclusive and Innovative Design Research” (https://www.designmattersproject.eu/), explaining the focus of each project partner: Mariona Moncunill (BAU), Francisco Laranjo (Lusofona), Laurene Vaughan (RMIT), Lorenzo Imbesi (Cumulus), Valentina Dalla Torre and Federica Michieletti (Itinerari Paralleli), Viktor Malakuczi (Sapienza).

Next, we had four wonderful keynote speakers. The two speakers of the morning session focused on inclusivity specifically in the context of PhD studies, considering the lived experience of PhD students themselves. The session included Teal Triggs (Royal College of Art), moderated by Laurene Vaughan, as well as Thomas Stempka (BAU College of Arts and Design of Barcelona), moderated by Mariona Moncunill.
In the afternoon, keynote speakers shared frameworks and tools for inclusive design research and practice both in academic and professional contexts. This session included Antonio Grillo (Executive Design Director at Tangity), moderated by Angela Giambattista, then Margherita Pillan (Politecnico di Milano), moderated by Luca D'Elia.

Finally, the roundtable discussion with civil society actors, moderated by Viktor Malakuczi, explored inclusion along three questions: the first about inclusivity in day-to-day activities, the second about the challenges encountered regarding inclusivity, and the last on the necessary skills that young designers and researchers should develop around this topic. Taking turns to respond these, we had four speakers: Emilia Astore (Human Rights Education Head of Unit of Amnesty International Italia), Charlie Robertson (Co-founder of Make it Werk), Gian Pietro Leonardi (Author and curator of Q***rographies), and Simone Riflesso (Graphic Designer, Disability and Intersectional Activist).

A heartfelt thank you to all the speakers, moderators, participants, as well as further members of the local DesignMatters team Miriam Saviano, Sonia Belhaj, Marcello Risolo, and photo/video team Federico Lovito and Stefano Malvoni.

Stay tuned for the recordings which we will publish soon at the conference website!

Corroded by a series of educational pursuits in the fine & applied arts across Europe and the Americas, Thomas Stempka has been called an artist, an antidesigner, a lover, and a poet at various points throughout their life. Mentally located somewhere between Harrisburg and São Paulo, Thomas has been physically based in Barcelona for the last 5 years. Since 2021, they have been attempting to terminate an artistic practice based PhD in Design confronting the inherent contradictions and confluences in what could be called Q***r Urbanism.
