🎭 Before there was “Italian cinema”, there was Vittorio Gassman.
Born in Genoa on 1 September 1922, Vittorio Gassman became one of the defining actors of Italian theatre and cinema: famous for a voice you could recognise instantly, an imposing stage presence and an extraordinary ability to move between comedy and drama.

🎬 But Gassman was not simply a movie star.
He trained at Rome’s Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica Silvio d’Amico*, conquered the theatre stage with Shakespeare and the great classics, and later became one of the faces of the golden age of Italian cinema.

💡Fun fact: In the 1950s, a television programme built entirely around his performances earned him the nickname "Il Mattatore”, The Showman. The name stuck, becoming almost synonymous with his larger-than-life personality.

From the stage to television, from Shakespeare to comedy, Gassman helped make acting itself part of Italy’s cultural identity, bringing theatrical excellence to millions of people.

✨ His legacy? A reminder that great performers do more than entertain : they shape the way a generation speaks, laughs and sees itself.
Vittorio Gassman teaches us that culture can have a voice, and sometimes, you only need to hear it once to remember it forever.

🎨 Did you know that Italy was home to one of the first institutions in the world dedicated specifically to industrial design?
Meet ISIA, the Higher Institute for Artistic Industries, a unique part of Italy’s higher education system, where design, creativity and innovation come together.
Founded in 1922 in Monza as the Università delle Arti Decorative, ISIA was created at a time when Italy was beginning to rethink the relationship between art, industry and everyday objects. Its experience later became a model for the development of Italian design education.

With 5 different ISIA Institutions located in Italy (Faenza, Firenze, Pescara, Roma and Urbino) today they offer specialised higher education in fields such as:
✏️ Product & Industrial Design
💻 Communication & Digital Design
📐 Graphic Design
🪑 Interior & Exhibition Design
🌱 Sustainable & Social Design

Rather than simply teaching students how to make things beautiful, ISIA’s approach places emphasis on research, experimentation, materials, technology and the relationship between people and objects.

From the objects we use every day to the way we communicate and experience the world, Italian design has always been about more than aesthetics.

🍒 “È la ciliegina sulla torta” literally, “It’s the cherry on the cake!” 🎂

In Italian, it means the perfect finishing touch: that small, delightful detail that makes something already good truly special.
✨ The image comes from traditional cakes topped with a bright red cherry: simple, sweet, and impossible to miss.
In Italian culture, cherries often symbolise joy, abundance, and the pleasures of life (and yes, one cherry always leads to another, another popular way of saying/ modo di dire 😉).

Designed by the legendary architect Andrea Palladio, these buildings reflect harmony, proportion, and innovation in both urban and rural settings. Recognised by UNESCO, they have inspired architects worldwide for centuries.
💡 Did you know? Palladio was inspired by ancient Roman villae, but introduced innovative functional solutions that influence architecture to this day.
The Teatro Olimpico, designed by Palladio, is the oldest covered theatre in classical style still in existence.
✨ Vicenza and the Palladian Villas are a testament to the enduring power of architecture to inspire.

🔭 Margherita Hack (12 June 1922 – 29 June 2013)
Astrophysicist, science communicator and the first woman to direct an astronomical observatory in Italy, Margherita Hack was one of the country's most influential voices in science.

As Director of the Astronomical Observatory of Trieste from 1964 to 1987, she contributed to the development of Italian astrophysics while helping establish Trieste as an important international centre for astronomical research. She was also a passionate advocate for making science accessible to everyone, inspiring generations of students to approach knowledge with curiosity and a critical mind.

🪐 She reminds us that science is not only about knowledge, but also about wonder, curiosity and freedom of thought.
⭐Margherita Hack teaches us that education is not only about what we know, but about the questions we dare to ask.

“Prendere qualcuno in giro”, the Italian way to say to tease someone! ✨ In Italy, we don’t say “I’m just kidding”; we say “ti sto prendendo in giro!”, which literally means: “I’m taking you for a walk around” 🚶‍♂️
It means to joke or playfully make fun of someone, usually among friends.

💡 📚 The expression originally meant to lead someone around in circles, the way you’d distract or confuse them for fun. Over time, it became the go-to phrase for any kind of light teasing or joking. So, next time an Italian friend laughs and says “Ti sto prendendo in giro!”, don’t worry, they’re not being mean. They’re just keeping it friendly and fun, because laughter is part of speaking Italian (among other things).
