Welcome to the official page of the University of Arkansas Rome Center. This is done through local site visits, museum tours, and travel throughout Italy.

The city of Rome, with its cultural resources and rich history, provides an infinite source of learning opportunities for students from all over the world. Students have the possibility to experience its history, evolution, and culture in an urban context with over two thousand years of development. The Rome Center offers an educational experience that replaces the traditional classroom with a didactic hands-on approach. With the university being located in the heart of the city, students have access to an amazing environment to complete their studies. Their academic, cultural, and personal growth are the goals of our institution.

What started as a challenge during Hack the Eternal City became part of something bigger!

The urban design ideas developed by our students during the Hackathon were showcased at ManiGreen 2026, the open-air exhibition organized by 2050ToPeople in the gardens of Castel Sant'Angelo, bringing their vision for a more sustainable and inclusive Rome to a wider audience.

The conversation continued at Palazzo Taverna, where we welcomed local high school seniors for a special roundtable with professionals from different fields, exploring future opportunities, challenges, and career paths.

A special thank you to Lindsey Aloia, Associate Dean for International Education at the University of Arkansas, for joining us and sharing an inspiring closing message with students preparing for the next chapter of their academic journey.

Two experiences, one shared goal: encouraging young people to imagine, question, and shape the world around them.

What happens when students are invited to rethink the city around them?

Developed together with Rome Future Week, our Tactical Urbanism workshop challenged students to explore the Ostiense and Gazometro area and imagine more inclusive, sustainable, and people-centered urban spaces. Their ideas, developed throughout a day of teamwork and exchange with professionals, came together in a shared Collective Manifesto!

Interior Design students, led by Rome Center Architecture faculty Francesca Riccardo, are working with the Lazio Fragile X Syndrome Association to design spaces for young people with Fragile X syndrome.

During a recent site visit in Dragona, Rome, students measured and documented the house that will become the focus of their project—but the most important part of the day was meeting the young people, their families, and members of the association.

Their stories and needs will now help guide the design of a welcoming space for spending time together, participating in activities, and building greater independence.

The project is part of a course that has received the University of Arkansas Service Learning designation, connecting design education with meaningful community engagement.

Rome Center reunion, Fayetteville edition 🇮🇹🐗❤️

It was so special to see so many familiar faces come together again—and to meet future students getting ready for their own Rome adventure in Spring and Summer 2027!

From sharing favorite memories to answering questions about life in Rome, the evening brought past and future Rome Center students together in one place.

Because the semester may end, but the Rome Center community goes far beyond Rome. ✨

The Fall Design Lecture Series is back! 🏛️✨

For the first lecture of the semester, we welcomed architect Paolo Desideri for “Creativity versus Extravagance. Architects use forms to solve problems.”

Students were invited to reflect on creativity as a tool for design and problem-solving, exploring how architectural form can respond to real needs rather than simply pursue the extraordinary.

A special thank you to Paolo Desideri for sharing his experience and perspective with our Architecture and Interior Design students, and to Francesca Riccardo, Rome Center Architecture faculty, for coordinating the Design Lecture Series.

A look back at Data Privacy & Ethics this summer at the Rome Center 📚✨

Led by faculty Rumi Rios, the course brought students into conversation with professionals from the luxury and venture capital sectors, exploring how privacy, ethics, compliance, and responsible business practices take shape beyond the classroom.

A special thank you to our guest speakers Cristiana Cappetta (FENDI), Claudia Renzi (BVLGARI), and Melissa Morano Aurigemma (Exceptional Capital) for sharing their expertise, professional experiences, and perspectives with our students.

One more experience from Summer 2026 that connected academic learning with the professional world. 🌍

The first Architecture Workshop of the semester brought together students from all studio sections at the University of Arkansas Rome Center!

These mini thematic workshops feature 20-minute lessons led in turn by Architecture Studio faculty, followed by an exercise that students develop in their own classrooms and submit that day or by the end of the week. Open to all Architecture sections, the sessions encourage experimentation and exchange across the program.

This semester’s topics include cartography, master planning, diagrams in concept development, and principles for designing museums and green spaces.

Mondays are for the Rome Center Club! 🎲🛍️🍕

Every Monday, our Student Life team invites students to join free activities designed to explore Rome, try something new, and spend time together outside the classroom.

This week, students chose between: Games Night at the Rome Center with Chris, complete with board games and plenty of snacks 🎲, or a thrifting adventure through Monti with Claudia, searching for vintage finds in one of Rome’s coolest neighborhoods.

And because no Rome adventure is complete without food, the Monti crew wrapped up the evening with a taste of Roman classics—pizza and supplì in Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. 🇮🇹

Different plans, same goal: getting together, discovering the city, and making Mondays a little more fun. ✨

Alumni Spotlight ✨

When Isabella Thompson arrived in Rome in the summer of 2024, she hoped to strengthen her Italian and immerse herself in the local culture.

What she found was an experience that changed the course of her future.

Through an independent study with Rome Center’s Faculty of Italian, Barbara Spaccini and an internship with Hummustown Rome, Isabella discovered the confidence to adapt to new environments, embrace new challenges, and pursue opportunities she hadn't imagined before.

Today, after graduating with degrees in Political Science, International Studies, and Italian, she's beginning a Master's in Global Studies at Lund University in Sweden. She also recently returned to the Rome Center—not as a student, but as a presenter at the AATI Conference, where she shared her undergraduate research on The Decameron with scholars from across the United States.

"Studying abroad gave me the courage to pursue a master's degree abroad and prepared me for the challenges I might face."

✨ We can't wait to see where the Rome experience takes our alumni next.

🏔️ From mountain peaks to historic gardens.

Landscape Architecture Summer 2026 students experienced two remarkable landscapes in Northern Italy—from the alpine scenery of Monte Altissimo to the beautifully restored Parco Guerrieri Gonzaga.

After taking in breathtaking views of Lake Garda and the Brenta Dolomites, the group explored a historic garden where centuries of design and conservation continue to shape the landscape today.

Experiencing both wild and designed landscapes in the same day offered a powerful reminder of the many ways people interact with—and shape—the environment around them.
