“A Tour of the Balkans” embarked this year too, and it was amazing!

For three years now, this Spring Break trip - a longstanding tradition at the Rome Center - has been brought back. Students set out on a journey through Belgrade, Sarajevo, Srebrenica and Mostar, getting to meet locals and learning firsthand about the history of this complex, rich, troubled, beautiful region of the world.

Towards the end of the semester, the Rome Start Global Scholars travelled to Belgium to expand on the ideas of global awareness and the common good.

Day 1: Visit to Headquarters. There they spoke with a political advisor to chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the United States.

Day 2: Visit with the Jesuit European Social Centre’s European Leadership Programme participants to discuss what common good and global awareness looks like in their personal and professional lives.

Finally before leaving, the students went on a walking tour of Brussels where they made and ate their own chocolates!

“I’m lucky. I would talk about movies and read books anyway.”
When passion becomes purpose, learning stops feeling like an obligation and starts feeling like a gift.
At our recent conversation with Professor Flaminio di Biagi at the Celebration for Scholarship in the Rome Center Library, we were reminded that studying abroad is not just about earning credits. It is about curiosity. It is about falling in love with ideas and sitting in rooms where stories travel across languages, across screens, and across cultures.
There is something special about being surrounded by people who genuinely love what they teach. That energy stays with you long after the evening ends.
Here’s to doing what lights you up, and to learning wherever you are. 🎬📖
