Duquesne in Rome

Duquesne in Rome Duquesne University Italian Campus in Rome, Italy. The Fall 2004 semester saw the inauguration of our new campus, a more permanent home in the eternal city.

Welcome to the Duquesne University Italian Campus, in cooperation with the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. The history of the Italian Campus program begins with the Spring 2001 semester, where the Italian Campus was housed at the Villa Santa Cecilia in the suburb of Vitinia. During these past years, the Italian Campus program has grown into an important academic and life expanding study ab

road program for students of Duquesne University's home campus in Pittsburgh, PA. Rome is truly the eternal city! From the omnipresent ruins of the powerful Rome that set the standard for much of the world in ancient days, to the emblems such as the Vatican, that continue to set standards in the 21st century. To live in Rome is to live its history and the story of a progressive people. Although you will have plenty of time for personal travel to other places in Italy and Europe while here, a student of Duquesne University Italian campus soon calls home, the eternal city of Rome

We welcome you to Rome and to the Italian Campus!

Today we said goodbye to our Maymester Nursing students, and we are filled with gratitude. 💙

What an incredible three weeks of learning, discovery, friendship, and adventure. From the seaside village of Pioppi to the streets of Rome, these students immersed themselves in the HEAL program, exploring the story of medicine across centuries—from the ancient baths of Pompeii to modern clinical observations at Policlinico Tor Vergata.

Along the way, they embraced new perspectives, built lasting connections, and created memories that will stay with them long after their journey home.

Rome gave them so much—but they left their mark here, too. Their curiosity, compassion, and enthusiasm made a lasting impact on our community, and they will be deeply missed.

As one chapter closes, another is already on the horizon. Now begins the countdown to welcoming our Fall 2026 students this August. ✈️🇮🇹

Stay tuned this summer as we share highlights from an incredible year. We can’t wait for the next adventure to begin.

Arrivederci for now, Maymester Nursing. ❤️

✨ Our Maymester Duquesne University School of Nursing students had the incredible opportunity to visit the medical HUB of the Community of Sant’Egidio in Rome 🇮🇹 Sant'Egidio

Founded in Rome in 1968, the Community of Sant’Egidio is an international movement known for its commitment to peace, solidarity, and friendship with society’s most vulnerable populations 🤝 Through social outreach, humanitarian programs, and global initiatives, the community works to promote dignity and inclusion for all.

During the visit, students spoke with healthcare volunteers providing essential medical services to individuals experiencing homelessness, undocumented migrants, and other vulnerable members of the community ❤️‍🩹 They also learned about Sant’Egidio’s DREAM Project in Africa 🌍 — an initiative focused on preventing and treating HIV/AIDS, improving access to healthcare, and supporting mothers and children through education, treatment, and long-term community care. The Spiritans proudly partner with Sant’Egidio in this shared mission of global health and human dignity. U.S. Spiritans

Witnessing compassion in action was truly inspiring ✨ As future nurses, our students were reminded that healthcare is not only about treating illness, but also about serving humanity, protecting dignity, and giving back to our communities 💙🩺

Our Maymester Duquesne University School of Nursing students were honored to attend the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. Prior to the event, they researched four nurses who gave their lives while serving on the front lines during World War II, making this tribute especially meaningful as future nurses honoring those who embodied the profession’s highest ideals of courage, compassion, and service. 🙏

Alongside students from IIS Einstein-Bachelet High School, President-Elect Dr. David Dausey, U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta, and members of the U.S. and Italian armed forces, our students stood in quiet gratitude for lives devoted to protecting others. For many, the most powerful moments came not in speeches, but in reflection—recognizing the shared humanity that connects generations across time, language, and borders.

In honoring those who sacrificed everything, our students were reminded that nursing is not only a profession, but a calling rooted in dignity, empathy, and hope. May we never forget the cost of war, and may the memory of the fallen strengthen our commitment to peace, compassion, and the care of one another. 🇺🇸 🇮🇹

Today we celebrate an incredible milestone and an even more incredible person: Michael Wright. 💙

For 25 years, Michael has dedicated his life, heart, and spirit to Duquesne University — and every single one of those years has been devoted to our beloved campus in Rome. From arriving in Rome straight after graduating from Duquesne, to becoming one of the pillars of our international community, Michael’s passion for study abroad, his unwavering dedication to students, and his love for this mission have never once faded.

Michael truly embodies the Spiritan mission in everything he does. He inspires all of us to live lives guided by faith, service, compassion, and community. From the early days at Villa Santa Cecilia to our current campus in Rome, Michael has done it all — always with humility, warmth, and an open heart.

His impact reaches far beyond Rome. Michael helped create the Duquesne in Dublin program and now serves as Director of European Programs. He has also led transformative programs across Africa, including in Tanzania and Ghana, helping generations of students grow through global experiences that change lives forever.

For so many students, colleagues, and friends, Michael has been far more than a leader — he has been a guide, mentor, role model, and friend. We are incredibly lucky and deeply grateful to walk alongside someone whose life and work have touched so many.

Tantissimi auguri, Michael, and congratulations on 25 amazing years! 🇮🇹✨

As we conclude the 3rd edition of HEAL — Health, Education, Awareness & Longevity in the Mediterranean — our hearts are full. ♥️

In the weeks ahead, we look forward to sharing the incredible experiences of learning, cultural connection to Italy and the Cilento region, and the rich interdisciplinary collaboration among nursing and physical therapy students, global scholars, healthcare professionals, and the people of Pioppi.

This journey reminded us that healthcare is not only about knowledge and skill, but also about humanity, compassion, community, and learning how slowing down can help us better care for ourselves, our patients, and the world around us. The Mediterranean lifestyle showed us the beauty of wellness through simple daily actions and meaningful connection.

Most of all, we are grateful for our students — truly one of the best groups ever. Their kindness, professionalism, curiosity, and joy made this experience unforgettable. They reminded us why Duquesne is such a special place: not just a university, but a family. 🫶

Thank you to everyone who made HEAL 2026 so meaningful. We can’t wait for 2027! 🇮🇹💙🙏

Happy International Nursing Day to all the incredible nurses in Italy, the US. and around the world 🇮🇹🇺🇸💙

International Nursing Day is celebrated every May 12 in honor of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who was born in Florence in 1820. Her connection to Italy makes today especially meaningful as we recognize the lasting impact nurses have on healthcare and communities worldwide.

This week, we are especially honored to welcome 20 Maymester nursing students and faculty to the HEAL program here in Italy. It is a privilege to have them with us as they learn, serve, and experience global healthcare firsthand.

Grazie a tutti gli infermieri e le infermiere per il vostro impegno quotidiano. 👏

Day one of our 4th Annual Physical Therapy World Summit was an incredible success. 💫

With guest presenters from Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence, UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, two of Kenya’s top physical therapists, and Duquesne’s own faculty, students had the opportunity to learn from leaders in the field of physical therapy and healthcare. 🌍

From engaging presentations and meaningful discussions to networking with fellow Italian PT students, today was filled with collaboration, innovation, and global perspectives in patient care.

An inspiring day of learning, connection, and professional growth — and we’re just getting started. 🌍💪🇮🇹

From marble muscles to real movement 💪✨

Our Maymester PT students turned Florence into their classroom—studying anatomy through Michelangelo’s David, exploring early care at the Ospedale degli Innocenti, and diving into the incredible anatomical wax models at La Specola.
