Orientation this past week has included quite a bit of "class time": Italian language lessons and workshops on the four dimensions of priestly formation. The seminarians also toured the Vatican Necropolis (Scavi) and the Swiss Guard Barracks. The Class of 2030 will spend the weekend in Assisi on pilgrimage. Please continue to pray for them!

New Man Orientation continues! Recent days have been filled with meetings, language testing, fraternity, prayer, and a little recreation. But the real highlight has been two special visits to St. Peter’s Basilica.

The New Men toured the Basilica, celebrated Holy Mass at the Tomb of St. Peter, and attended the Sunday Angelus, where Pope Leo XIV greeted them from his window. Best of all, they had the extraordinary opportunity for a private audience with the Holy Father. Watch for photos from that special visit coming soon!

Monsignor Thomas Powers, Rector, is pleased to announce that Most Reverend Earl A. Boyea, Bishop of the Diocese of Lansing, has agreed to release Father Daniel Westermann ‘14 to serve as a spiritual director at the College, effective September 1, 2026.

Father Westermann entered the seminary after attending Father Gabriel Richard Catholic High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2014 after attending St. John Vianney College Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and the Pontifical North American College in Rome.

After ordination, he served two years in East Lansing at Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish and Saint John Church and Student Center, which serves the students of Michigan State University. He then returned to Rome to finish a licentiate in Moral Theology at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas (Angelicum). Upon returning to the Diocese, he served as the associate pastor at the Church of the Holy Family in Grand Blanc, and the following year was moved to serve as administrator of St. Mary and St. Joseph in Durand. In the summer of 2019, he was appointed the pastor of Saint John the Baptist Parish in Ypsilanti, which serves Eastern Michigan University. In 2025, he was assigned to the staff at Saint John Vianney Seminary, where he served as a formation advisor and spiritual director. He is currently completing the Spiritual Direction Training Program through the Institute for Priestly Formation.

Commenting on the appointment of Father Westermann, Monsignor Powers said, “I am very grateful both to Bishop Boyea for allowing Father Westermann to serve as a member of the formation team at the North American College, and to Father Westermann for his generous ‘yes.’ Along with his experience in seminary formation and his training in spiritual direction, I am confident that he will also model for the seminarians a prayerful, joyful and priestly example.”

Early orientation continues. The New Men are attending to practical matters such as exchanging money, buying clerical shirts and other local supplies, setting up their rooms, and so on. They continue to explore the city - recent visits include St. John Lateran, the Scala Sancta, the Church of Quo Vadis, the Basilica of St. Sebastian, and the Catacombs of St. Callixtus. The seminarians also enjoyed a traditional BBQ cookout and lawn games over the weekend. The New Men are now in Assisi and Siena for several weeks, taking intensive Italian language courses. Orientation will resume for the entire Class of 2023 on August 20th!

Another academic year has begun: members of the Class of 2030 have arrived in Roma for Early Orientation! After an early arrival at the airport, the seminarians were greeted by our rector and settled into their rooms. The rest of their first day was filled with a tour of the seminary, introductions, prayer, and a festive meal al fresco on the 5th floor rooftop. Stay tuned for more photos and please keep these New Men in your prayers as they begin their Roman Formation. +

We recently celebrated the conclusion of another academic year with the annual Closing Mass and Banquet. The evening featured a display of the new chalices of our 4th-Year Deacons, heartfelt toasts, and warm farewells. Please keep the Class of 2027 in your prayers as they approach ordination in their home dioceses.
