And to conclude our Fall 2026 Academic Field Trips through Italy, we end in the south in Pompeii and Paestum. Both located in the Campania region, these incredible archaeological parks offer so much insight into not only the daily life of ancient Romans but also evidence of their engineering, urban planning, and architectural genius. Borrowing design styles from the ancient Greeks, ancient Romans continued to innovate and explore new ways to create community, establish religious traditions, improve public infrastructure, advance trade, and lead government process through their continuous construction of private homes, roads, temples, piazzas, theatres, bakeries, aqueducts, commercial storefronts, and so much more. The structures we create inform the lives that we lead and are an expression of our individual identity as well as our shared humanity.

Ferrara is a historic city in northern Italy renowned as Europe’s first modern planned city and a major Renaissance cultural center. Located along the Po River, Ferrara became an intellectual hotspot for artists, philosophers, architects, poets, and designers. Their collective humanist ideologies birthed the concept of the “ideal city“: a built environment that prioritizes overall urban harmony and humanistic values over individual buildings. The resulting principles of town planning continue to influence town design practice and planned preservation around the world.

Our architecture, urban planning, and interior design students toured Ferrara under the guided instruction of professor Romolo Martemucci who shepherded students through the city and throughout a visit to the Castello Estense di Ferrara, a moated medieval 14th century castle in the city center. Originally built by military architect Bartolino da Novara, today, the castle serves as a public museum, where visitors can tour the elaborate ducal apartments, chapel, the orange garden, and underground prisons.

Stop number two on our field trip tour through Italy is . Combining Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance styles, Venetian architecture features delicate loggias, pointed arches, quatrefoil tracery, and colorful marble or stucco facades. Once the capital of the Republic of Venice for almost a millennium (from 810 to 1797) Venice was originally constructed in the early 400s A.D. Through a marvel of innovative engineering, builders drove millions of wooden piles into the lagoon’s marshy clay, then covering these timber piles with Istrian stone blocks, lightweight brick walls, and flexible lime mortar, allowing the infrastructure to shift safely with the rising tides and soft muddy ground. Led by our Professor Lavinia Nannini, students winded through alleyways , across piazzas, underneath loggias, over bridges, exploring the floating city also known as La Serenissima: the Most Serene.

It’s not a Pantheon Institute semester without our Field Trips through Italy! First up is , the capital of Tuscany. Lead by Professor Nannini, students toured all throughout the city considered the birthplace of the , all while enjoying some incredible Fall weather. Stopping in the Piazza‘s to listen to on-site lectures and sketch, students learn how 15th century architects, sculptures, painters, and urban planners prioritized harmony of shape and form in their designs, reviving the use of columns, pilasters, pediments, round arches, and hemispherical domes after the Gothic period.

Thank you so much go the Amherst and departments for hosting us today. We were also incredibly lucky to have so many fabulous alumni with us! Thank you you to , , and for sharing your study abroad experience, at Pantheon Institute, with other students considering coming to Rome. There is no better feedback than from those who have experienced the Eternal City for themselves. A big thank you as well to who supports so many students in pursuing as a meaningful part of their academic journey.

We look forward to seeing many more UMASS students in Rome!

We had so much fun today at the PSU ! Prior to the PSU v. Buffalo Bulls 12noon game, we hosted a breakfast tailgate in lot 45 next to Beaver Stadium. Talking to perspective first, second, and third year students BArch students, as well as program alumni and architecture faculty, we talked all things , , , and merch! Never forget your Pantheon Institute merch 👍 We look forward to welcoming these students to Rome in the future, and we’re already planning our return to Penn State for our next tailgate!

Last week, we had a wonderful time visiting Carnegie Mellon University and speaking with their first-year students about in with the Pantheon Institute. We were so lucky to have two amazing alumni with us: Davide Decker (.deckerr), a current CMU student who studied with us just over this most recent summer 2026, and Peter Margittai (), one of our earliest PSU alumni from 1994. Both had some incredible perspective to offer on how study abroad deepens your understanding of the built environment by challenging your preconceived notions about the enduring legacy and influence of architectural design. Rome offers an amazing spectrum of artistic stylings, religious influences, political affiliations, and engineering marvels. From its many churches and temples to its spectacular monuments and archeological sites, from the dozens of bridges, thousands of sculptures, and prolific museums, from ancient to modern, the Eternal City allows you to glimpse the transformation of the urban landscape over centuries. Those lessons can teach us so much about how we can move forward in designing spaces for the future, adapting the existing building materials and repurposing the enduring infrastructure to create something new and prescient for current and forthcoming generations.

A special thanks to Heather Workinger () and Christine Menand for hosting us and for encouraging students to explore the many amazing study abroad opportunities offered at CMU! We encourage all students to get out there and see what’s possible.
