KM3NeT-Napoli

KM3NeT-Napoli Questo è la pagina ufficiale del gruppo di Napoli che partecipa alla realizzazione dell'infrastruttura di ricerca KM3NeT.

KM3NeT is a research infrastructure housing the next generation neutrino telescopes. Once completed, the telescopes will have detector volumes between megaton and several cubic kilometres of clear sea water. Located in the deepest seas of the Mediterranean, KM3NeT will open a new window on our Universe, but also contribute to the research of the properties of the elusive neutrino particles. With t

he ARCA telescope, KM3NeT scientists will search for neutrinos from distant astrophysical sources such as supernovae, gamma ray bursters or colliding stars. The ORCA telescope is the instrument for KM3NeT scientists studying neutrino properties exploiting neutrinos generated in the Earth's atmosphere. Arrays of thousands of optical sensors will detect the faint light in the deep sea from charged particles originating from collisions of the neutrinos and the Earth. The facility will also house instrumentation for Earth and Sea sciences for long-term and on-line monitoring of the deep sea environment and the sea bottom at depth of several kilometers.

We met last week in the historic heart of Valencia for the first Collaboration Meeting of 2026.
Researchers came together to discuss the latest results from the ARCA and ORCA detectors, plan upcoming sea campaigns, and share progress on neutrino oscillation and multi-messenger astrophysics analyses.
We were also delighted to welcome two new observer institutes: Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the University of Turku.
During the meeting, the winners of the Giorgos Androulakis Prize were announced, recognising extraordinary dedication to the KM3NeT project:
🏅 Early Career Scientists: Alfonso Garcia Soto & Lizeth Morales Gallegos
🏅 Technicians & Engineers: Irene Sgura & Alexander Enzenhöfer
A big thank you to the Valencia Experimental Group of Astroparticles (VEGA) for their outstanding organisation and warm hospitality 🙌

🚢🌊 Welcome, ARCA51! A Milestone for KM3NeT! 🌊🚢
In the past two weeks, an outstanding sea campaign has expanded KM3NeT/ARCA to 51 detection units! 💥 This record-setting operation also introduced a cutting-edge acoustic positioning system to sharpen the telescope’s deep-sea accuracy 🎯
Key highlights:
🔹 18 new detection units deployed
🔹 New acoustic triangulation system with sub-meter precision
👏 Huge thanks to our offshore & onshore teams for this phenomenal achievement!
