🌿💧 Two inspiring days dedicated to Nature-based Solutions for resilient water management!

The training workshop held in Cagliari, organized by the Department of Civil, Environmental Engineering and Architecture (University of Cagliari) and the Desertification Research Centre (University of Sassari) within the NATMed Prima Project (funded by the PrimaProgram), successfully brought together 25 representatives from key regional institutions and PhD students.

🌳 The programme included a field visit to the Forested Infiltration Area of Arborea, the experimental study site of NATMed. This on-site experience allowed participants to explore a concrete application of NbS to real-world water management challenges, bridging theory and practice through a living case study.

📚 The sessions were rich, engaging and forward-looking, strengthening capacities in sustainable water management and promoting the adoption of Nature-based Solutions across the Mediterranean.

👏 A special thank you to all participants for their active involvement and valuable contributions, and to the lecturers for delivering highly interesting and inspiring presentations.

🤝 The workshop also created strong synergies among major European initiatives, including NPP-SOL (PRIMA), RESWATER and Med-RESOURCE (Interreg NEXT MED Programme), MEDISS (ENI CBC Med), and COEVOLVERS (HORIZON EUROPE), reinforcing collaboration and knowledge exchange across projects.

Venerdì 27 febbraio vi aspettiamo al Teatro dei Salesiani di Arborea per un appuntamento speciale: la restituzione pubblica di quasi vent'anni di ricerca condotta sul territorio.
L'evento è organizzato dal Nucleo Ricerca Desertificazione (NRD) dell'Università di Sassari nell'ambito del progetto internazionale OurMED-Prima — un progetto europeo dedicato alla gestione sostenibile delle risorse idriche nel Mediterraneo, che mette al centro la partecipazione delle comunità locali, la co-produzione di conoscenza e la costruzione di spazi di apprendimento condiviso tra ricercatori, cittadini e portatori di interesse (Living Labs).
Arborea è uno degli otto siti dimostrativi del progetto OurMED a livello mediterraneo: un territorio scelto per la sua complessità socio-ecologica e per la sua capacità di essere laboratorio vivo di innovazione e resilienza. Venerdì sarà l'occasione per restituire alla comunità i risultati di questo percorso, riflettendo insieme su temi che riguardano tutti: identità, ambiente, cultura, cooperazione, ruolo delle donne, ricambio generazionale e visione del futuro.
Le ricerche condotte negli anni hanno avuto un carattere partecipato: i cittadini non sono stati semplici oggetti di studio, ma protagonisti attivi nella co-costruzione della conoscenza. Venerdì saranno proprio le loro voci a essere al centro dell'incontro.
Perché Arborea non è solo il suo passato. È anche — e soprattutto — ciò che sceglierà di diventare.

On Friday, February 27, join us at the Teatro dei Salesiani in Arborea for a special public event: the presentation of nearly twenty years of scientific research carried out in and with this community.
The event is organized by the Desertification Research Centre (NRD) of the University of Sassari as part of the international project OurMED-Prima — a European initiative focused on sustainable water storage and distribution across the Mediterranean, built around stakeholder participation, co-production of knowledge, and the creation of long-lasting social learning spaces known as Living Labs.
Arborea is one of OurMED's eight demonstration sites across the Mediterranean region — chosen for its socio-ecological complexity and its capacity to serve as a living laboratory for innovation and resilience. Friday's event is an opportunity to give back to the community the results of this scientific journey, opening a shared reflection on topics that concern everyone: identity, environment, culture, cooperation, the role of women, generational renewal, and the vision of a shared future.
Over the years, research in Arborea has taken the form of participatory action research, where citizens were not merely subjects of study, but active co-producers of knowledge. On Friday, their voices will take centre stage.
Because Arborea is not only its past. It is — above all — what it chooses to become.

We’re pleased to share a new article published on Journal of Hydrology reporting results from field experiments carried out within the **Làcani Living Lab of the SALAM-MED project**. The study explores 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 in Mediterranean grassland–woodland ecosystems, providing valuable insights into soil–plant–water interactions and land management.

In Arborea (Sardinia, Italy) Case Study 3 of the NATMed Prima Project, shows how Nature-based Solutions can address groundwater pollution and strengthen water resilience in areas. 🌿

To reduce nitrate contamination, NATMed has implemented a Forested Infiltration Area ( ) that:

🌳 Enhances water infiltration and groundwater recharge
🧪 Promotes natural nitrate removal through soil and biological processes
💧 Improves water quality before it reaches the aquifer

are also testing innovative materials to further enhance system performance and to capture both nitrates and phosphates, targeting the main drivers of water pollution.

𝗜𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗼 𝗢𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗼: 𝘂𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶 𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗮

Il lago Omodeo, il più grande bacino artificiale della Sardegna centrale, è una risorsa strategica per l’approvvigionamento idrico, l’irrigazione agricola e la produzione di energia idroelettrica.
Negli ultimi anni, però, le prolungate condizioni di siccità che hanno interessato l’isola hanno inciso in modo sempre più evidente sulla sua disponibilità d’acqua.
Le immagini del satellite Copernicus Sentinel-2, acquisite nel dicembre 2023, 2024 e 2025, mostrano con chiarezza una progressiva riduzione dell’estensione del lago. Le fasce chiare lungo le sponde raccontano un abbassamento costante del livello dell’acqua e una perdita significativa di volume immagazzinato.
I dati confermano quanto osservato dallo spazio: lo stoccaggio è passato da 349 milioni di m³ a fine novembre 2023 (oltre l’83% della capacità) a 256 milioni di m³ nel 2024 (61%), fino a 187 milioni di m³ nel 2025, meno del 45% della capacità complessiva.
