Postgraduate training and leading-edge research in various areas of Physics, Mathematics, and Neurosciences are the objectives of SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies of Trieste. SISSA was the first Italian university to offer the PhD degree, and has continued to do so with notable success. Since its founding in 1978, SISSA has prepared more than 900 young people for careers in research and teaching: today SISSA represents one of the leading scientific institutions in Italy and a noted center on the international stage.

📚 Come raccontare la storia della scienza coniugando rigore storico, accessibilità e coinvolgimento?

📚L’8 e il 9 ottobre la SISSA ha ospitato il workshop “Storia della scienza in pubblico. Metodi, formati, formazione”, promosso dalla Società Italiana di Storia della Scienza e dal Laboratorio Interdisciplinare della SISSA.

Circa 50 partecipanti, tra storiche e storici della scienza e professioniste e professionisti della comunicazione scientifica, si sono confrontati su metodi, linguaggi e pratiche per raccontare la storia della scienza a pubblici diversi.

💬 Due giornate di interventi, panel e tavoli di lavoro per condividere esperienze, individuare buone pratiche e aprire nuove prospettive di collaborazione.

Grazie a tutte le persone che hanno partecipato e arricchito il confronto!

🧠 SISSA hosted this year’s TEX meeting, the annual conference of the Italian Network for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience (INCTN).

Over 100 participants came together to present and discuss the latest research in computational, theoretical and systems neuroscience, exchange ideas and explore shared scientific interests.

This year’s event was organised by Sebastian Goldt, Francesca Mastrogiuseppe and Eugenio Piasini.

🌌 El Gordo: Dark Matter could be self-interacting

✨ Simulations of El Gordo, one of the most massive and distant galaxy clusters ever observed, provide strong indications that dark matter could interact with itself through collisions.

📄 The study, conducted by Riccardo Valdarnini, a former researcher in SISSA’s Astrophysics and Cosmology group, shows that the observed properties of the cluster are particularly well reproduced by a two-state self-interacting dark matter model, in which particles can collide and exchange energy through both elastic and inelastic scattering channels.

🔭 These findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, offer new clues about the nature of one of the greatest mysteries in cosmology, although they will need to be tested through the study of other merging clusters.

🔬 Finding the right combination for quantum technologies

A new theoretical and computational approach developed at SISSA makes it possible to simulate the proximity effect with unprecedented accuracy. This phenomenon allows a material to become superconducting simply by being placed next to another superconducting material.

📄 The study, carried out with University of Trieste and California Institute of Technology and published in Physical Review Research, has been selected as an Editors’ Suggestion.

By efficiently combining different computational approaches, the new method overcomes long-standing limitations in simulating superconducting interfaces, even when the effect extends over large distances.

This work opens new possibilities for designing topological superconductors, key materials for future quantum technologies, including topological quantum computing.

🤝 SISSA and Trieste Police Headquarters sign agreement to support the international research community

SISSA has signed a three-year memorandum of understanding with the Trieste Police Headquarters (Questura), represented by Director Andrea Romanino and Police Commissioner Lilia Fredella.

The agreement aims to simplify and streamline procedures for the issuance and renewal of residence permits for non-EU students, researchers and academic staff, strengthening support for international mobility at the School.

By enhancing cooperation with the Questura’s Immigration Office, the initiative will make administrative processes more efficient and improve the overall experience of those coming to SISSA for study, research and teaching.
