Project 5: Coupling MITgcm and FABM for Ocean Biogeochemistry

We need to link physical ocean circulation (MITgcm) with complex biological processes (FABM) to create a modular ecosystem model.
You will develop the coupling between these two frameworks, ensuring the code is stable and scalable. You will run tests on the "MER" (Mediterranean Ecosystem) domains to verify that the physics and biology interact correctly.

On March 27th, the ICTP in Trieste hosted the final thesis defense session for the Master in High Performance Computing (MHPC).

The candidates presented the results of their research projects, which focused on code optimization, scalability, and the application of advanced computing techniques to complex scientific problems.

The presented works covered a wide range of HPC applications:

📍Nicola Aladrah: Design and evaluation of radiative open boundary schemes for the Oceananigans.jl ocean model.
📍Jenny Lynn A.: Performance and energy efficiency analysis of RISC-V architecture for direct N-body simulations.
📍Christian Tica: GPU porting and optimization of the RegCM5 regional climate model.
📍Ludwing Osmar Asturias Alquijay: Performance analysis of scientific applications on multiple RISC-V platforms.
📍Neeraj Kulhari: Machine Learning-accelerated approach for predicting lattice thermal conductivity.
📍Gustavo Paredes Torres: Band parallelization strategies and optimization of real-space projectors in Quantum ESPRESSO.
📍Ken Tanaka Hernandez: Machine Learning pipeline for earthquake detection and phase association using HPC infrastructures.
📍: GPU-optimized strategies for small-size jobs in Quantum ESPRESSO using OpenMP and OpenACC.
📍Mohammad Enayati: Parallelization and optimization of pre-stack depth migration (PSDM) codes.
📍André Feitosa Benevides: Performance analysis and GPU scalability of the biogeochemical model OGSTM-BFM.

Project 2: Mixed-Precision Optimization for Large-Scale Seismic Processing

Large-scale seismic algorithms are computationally expensive. Modern GPUs offer "Tensor Cores" and reduced-precision formats (fp16, bfloat16) that can drastically speed up calculations.
You will investigate hybrid-precision schemes. You'll identify which parts of the seismic code can run in lower precision to save energy and time, and where high precision must be kept to ensure numerical stability.

Project 1: Engineering ISTRICI for Seismic Depth Imaging

🌊 Seismic Unix is a powerful but complex tool for processing seismic data. OGS developed ISTRICI to simplify this, but it currently lacks a user-friendly, interactive interface.
You will engineer and update the ISTRICI codes for modern HPC environments. The goal is to create a practical interface that allows researchers to handle massive datasets and perform interactive velocity analysis with ease.
