“Complexity In and Of Spacetime”
Abstract.
Recent years have seen an explosion of progress in understanding spacetime emergence in AdS/CFT. These advances have unearthed a prominent role for computational complexity. However, we still do not have a satisfactory story as to why complexity theory is relevant to spacetime emergence. In this talk, I will provide such a story, and discuss some of its underpinnings and implications. This will provide a clearer story regarding the relevance of quantum informational notions to spacetime, and the understanding of spacetime in holography.

“Locating Fields in Spacetime”
Abstract.
How do classical fields occupy spacetime? Characterising fields as distributions of quantities over spacetime does not by itself provide a metaphysical account of what it is for a field, or a proper part of a field, to be located at a region. This talk addresses this issue in both Galilean and general-relativistic spacetime. In the Galilean case, the problem is comparatively straightforward: possible field configurations can be characterised independently of the spacetime regions they occupy and identified as occupants of absolute spacetime regions. In general relativity, however, the dynamical character of spacetime makes this separation more difficult: regions must be characterised structurally, while the identity of a field configuration cannot straightforwardly be fixed independently of the spacetime structure in which it occurs. Two strategies are examined: an independent approach, which preserves the distinction between occupants and regions, and a holistic approach, which instead characterises fields and spacetime through their joint relational structure. The latter succeeds where the former fails, but at the cost of introducing a modal constraint on the locative analysis.
