The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (CIHEAM Bari) is the Italian Headquarters of CIHEAM (International Center of Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies) an intergovernmental organization founded in 1962 under the auspices of OECD and of the Council of Europe. Since 2025, the Director of the CIHEAM Bari is Mr Biagio Di Terlizzi. CIHEAM Bari’s mission targets post-graduate higher educati

on, applied research and development cooperation. Its network involves hundreds of institutions located in several Mediterranean and African countries. In Italy, avails of a network of around 200 bodies among research, private sector, entrepreneurship, producers’ organizations, institutions. Thanks to this network, CIHEAM Bari ensures a timely mobilization of hundreds of experts able to operate abroad and in Italy. CIHEAM Bari’s facilities include an International Campus located in Valenzano (Bari, Italy) and an office in Tricase (Lecce, Italy) where capacity building actions are continuously carried out with both in-person and distance learning methodologies. 👉The Italian team CIHEAMBari CIHEAMBari sede Tricase Legambiente Università di Siena will present the project and start a dialogue with regional and local institutions in the beautiful Otranto Castle.

🌊Coastal erosion, anthropic impact, the growing presence of alien and not alien invasive species in our sea, and more multi-stressors on marine ecosystems will be discussed within the frame of the approach: the only way to adapt to climate change is to work closely together with the local communities, finding sustainable and resilient solutions based on the territory's needs.

🌿 Bringing sustainable development to life in the Cilento Bio-District

Our Master students in 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 recently spent several inspiring days in the Bio-District, in the Campania region, experiencing first-hand how sustainable territorial development can be translated into practice.

🔗The study visit combined institutional, cultural and productive dimensions of the territory. From the welcome by the Mayor of Camerota to visits to local enterprises and community initiatives, students explored concrete examples of , and .

🎯The programme included visits to (https://www.donnaclara.it/) meetings with Slow Food Presidia operators showcasing local products and , a demonstration of traditional , and explorations of prehistoric caves and archaeological coastal sites. Students also participated in a public event dedicated to the international promotion of Il in Sessa Cilento and concluded the experience at Cooperativa Nuovo Cilento’s Al Frantoio, a leading example of cooperative action for sustainable agriculture and .

Throughout the visit, students experienced how cooperation among producers, local authorities, communities and civil society can generate for managing natural resources, preserving cultural heritage and strengthening locally rooted food systems.

✅The experience also provided valuable opportunities to engage with key actors of the territory, including local authorities, founders of the Bio-District movement, university professors and agroecology experts, enriching the between academic and real-world .
