This week successfully defended her PhD thesis. She presented her results about the effects of the nutritional composition of the rearing substrate on the immune response of BSF larvae. This PhD project also allowed to explore the impact of heavy metal contamination on the physiology of this insect. Another step toward the efficient valorization of low-quality biomasses through this amazing insect. Congratulations to Sara for this achievement!

The BSF market is growing fast and is attracting the interest of a number of companies around the world. However, to boost the sector, open new frontiers, maximize the use of BSF, and provide companies with a more substantial profit margin, there is the need to explore novel applications of BSF biomolecules, diverging from their conventional use in animal feed. In this study electrically conductive bionanocomposite materials suitable for flexible electronics were fabricated using BSF proteins. Characterized by effective biodegradability, strain-sensing properties, high electrical conductivity, and high surface hydrophobicity, these bionanocomposites may be well suited for disposable flexible electronics, as in wearable devices, electrostatic discharge fabrics, or packaging.

New publication in collaboration with South China Agricultural University. In this study a selective breeding program for BSF, aimed at establishing a distinct strain with superior growth performance under cold conditions, was performed. 16S rRNA sequencing and transcriptomic analysis were used to investigate gut microflora and identify novel genes involved in cold tolerance in this insect.
