GJU Master’s Students Engage in Transformative Community-Based Social Work Field Visit

Students from the Master’s Program in Social Work – Migration and Refugees at the German Jordanian University (GJU) recently completed a comprehensive field visit as part of their Community-Based Interventions in Social Work course, delivered by Prof. Sahar Almakhanreh. The visit was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and practical community engagement.

During the excursion, GJU MA students collaborated with undergraduate social work students from Al-Balqa Applied University (Rahman University College), who were undertaking their community field training under the supervision of Dr. Khayria Shnickat. This joint gathering fostered an interactive exchange of ideas regarding grassroots initiatives, local challenges, and the dynamic role of modern social workers.

Academic discussions centered on the practicalities of community practice, allowing students to reflect on how interventions can better support empowerment, advocacy, intersectionality, and inclusive participation. Furthermore, GJU students took a leadership role by facilitating dedicated well-being sessions aimed at stress reduction and burnout prevention for the participating trainees. These sessions highlighted the vital role of emotional resilience and self-care within the social work profession.

To deepen their understanding of the local social fabric, the cohort participated in a community tour, which featured a visit to the Al-Salt Museum and a traditional lunch prepared by local women. This cultural immersion exposed students to community-led economic initiatives and solidarity networks.
Participants reported a highly positive and enriching experience, noting how the visit effectively localized social work practice and emphasized cultural sensitivity.

This initiative reflects the steadfast commitment of both universities to advancing experiential learning and preparing future social workers to engage effectively with diverse communities.

The 4th International “Fokus DaF/DaZ” Conference wasn’t just another academic event; it felt like a genuine meeting point for people who care about language, teaching, and the exchange of ideas across borders.

Listening to the conversations and seeing the energy in the sessions reminded me why the German dimension at GJU is such an essential part of who we are.

It’s always inspiring to see colleagues putting so much effort into creating spaces like this. Moments like these show the kind of academic culture we’re building — one that’s open, collaborative, and looking forward.
