Over the past three days, around 40 scientists from Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America gathered for a workshop at MARUM - Zentrum für Marine Umweltwissenschaften.

The international meeting focused on whether and in what formnew observatories can be established in the basaltic ocean crust at the Reykjanes Ridge.

The workshop, entitled “Young and Cool,” was part of the Magellan³ Workshop Series, funded by IODP³ and ICDP: International Continental Scientific Drilling Program

Introducing our new name, U.S. Scientific Ocean Drilling!

The transition will take place on February 3, 2026, across all JOIDES Resolution social media accounts: Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube. We still aim to bring you the latest opportunities, news, and achievements in scientific ocean drilling.

Why are we making this change? U.S. Scientific Ocean Drilling represents the full scope of what our community does. We will continue to honor the legacy of the JOIDES Resolution, but it no longer best represents U.S. scientific ocean drilling. With this name change, we aim to elevate the many exciting ways that the work of scientific ocean drilling continues in this new phase.

What do you need to do? Nothing! If you already follow our page, you will still be following us after the transition to U.S. Scientific Ocean Drilling.
