APSのGHOTBI Nader教授（MD, PhD）と、DYLIAEVA KARINA氏（APUアジア太平洋研究科博士前期課程　2023年9月卒、現Queen's University Belfast博士課程学生）が執筆したブックチャプターが、Taylor & Francis Group傘下のCRC Pressより出版されました。/ A book chapter authored by APS Professor GHOTBI Nader (MD, PhD) and Karina Dyliaeva (former graduate student at APU [graduated September 2023], current PhD candidate at Queen’s University Belfast) has been published by CRC Press which is managed by Taylor and Francis Group.

書籍タイトルは 『Artificial Intelligence and Social Technologies in Research Conduct』（2026年）、章タイトルは 「Artificial Intelligence in Student Research: Practical and Ethical Implications（学生の研究における人工知能：実践的および倫理的な含意）」 です。
本章では、学生の研究活動におけるAI支援の二面性に焦点を当てています。AIの有益な活用方法を紹介する一方で、研究能力の発達やアカデミック・インテグリティ（学問的誠実性）に及ぼしうる懸念についても考察しています。AIが学生の研究活動をどのように支援できるかを検討するとともに、その利用に伴う実践的・倫理的課題を論じています。

BOUKAMBA Kimo Hermann助教の論文がTourism and Hospitality誌に掲載されました！/ Assistant Professor BOUKAMBA Kimo Hermann Publishes in Tourism and Hospitality!

APUサステイナビリティ観光学部の BOUKAMBA Kimo Hermann助教の論文 ”Overtourism Communication and Public Visitor Guidance in Kyoto, Japan: A Soft Urban Governance Perspective”が、Tourism and Hospitality 誌に掲載されました。

オーバーツーリズムに関する公共メッセージは、しばしばその背景にある文脈から切り離して解釈されます。来訪者に向けた看板や注意喚起は、特に外国人観光客や地域住民との共生が議論される場面において、その地域が観光客を歓迎していないことの表れとして解釈されがちです。
本研究は、こうした個々のメッセージだけではなく、京都におけるオーバーツーリズム関連のコミュニケーションを、より広範なシステムとして捉えることを試みました。来訪者向けに公開された64件の資料を分析対象とし、メッセージの方向性、媒体の種類、発信主体の環境、対象となる空間的範囲がどのように組み合わさり、来訪者への案内や誘導を形成しているのかを明らかにしています。
分析の結果、京都におけるコミュニケーションは規制的なメッセージによって支配されているわけではないことが分かりました。むしろ、多くの情報発信は来訪者の行動や移動の誘導、混雑の管理、責任ある旅行の促進に重点を置いています。一方で、規制的なメッセージはより限定的に用いられており、特に祇園などの配慮が必要な地域に集中しています。また、来訪者を代替的な観光地へ誘導するメッセージは比較的少ないことも確認されました。
本研究は、これらの傾向を「ソフトな都市ガバナンス」という視点から捉えています。看板や案内表示などの公共コミュニケーションは、直接的な規制や取締りだけに頼るのではなく、観光客に望ましい行動や回遊のあり方、また配慮が求められる場所についての期待を示すことで、来訪者管理を支える目に見える手段として機能し得ると論じています。

Assistant Professor BOUKAMBA Kimo Hermann of the College of Sustainability and Tourism has published a new article in Tourism and Hospitality titled “Overtourism Communication and Public Visitor Guidance in Kyoto, Japan: A Soft Urban Governance Perspective.”

Public messages about overtourism are often read in isolation. A restrictive sign, warning, or request directed at visitors can easily be taken as evidence that a destination is becoming hostile or unwelcoming, especially where debates about foreign tourists, resident protection, local disruption, and cultural respect are already sensitive.

This study looks beyond individual messages and examines Kyoto’s overtourism communication as a wider system. Drawing on a corpus of 64 public-facing materials, it shows how message orientation, artifact type, source environment, and spatial focus work together to shape visitor guidance.

The findings show that Kyoto’s communication is not dominated by restrictive messages. Instead, most communication focuses on guiding visitors’ behavior and movement, managing congestion, and encouraging responsible travel. Restriction is more targeted and concentrated in sensitive areas, particularly Gion, while communication encouraging visitors toward alternative places remains comparatively limited.

The study interprets these patterns through the lens of soft urban governance and argues that public communication can function as a visible layer of visitor management by framing expectations around visitor conduct, mobility, and sensitive urban spaces without relying on direct regulation or enforcement alone.

APU国際経営学部　鈴木 泰教授による著書 “Toward a “Constitutional” Socialist State: Examining the Development of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics” （Emerald Publishing）が刊行されました。

本書は、社会主義、市場経済、デジタル技術、そしてグローバルな影響力が複雑に交錯する現代中国を、多角的な視点から考察した研究書です。革命期のマルクス主義から憲法論、ナショナリズム、デジタル・ガバナンスまで幅広いテーマを取り上げながら、中国の政治体制と思想的変容を分析しています。
また、「立憲社会主義（constitutional socialism）」という概念を提示し、基本的人権の保障こそが長期的な政治的正統性の基盤となる可能性を論じています。

Professor SUZUKI Yasushi of the APU College of International Management has published a new book, “Toward a “Constitutional” Socialist State: Examining the Development of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics” (Emerald Publishing).
This thought-provoking volume offers a multidimensional examination of contemporary China, where socialism, market-oriented development, digital technology, and growing global influence intersect. Drawing on themes ranging from revolutionary Marxism and constitutional thought to nationalism and digital governance, the book analyzes the evolution of China's political system and ideological foundations.
A central contribution of the book is the concept of “constitutional socialism,” which argues that the protection of fundamental rights may serve as an essential basis for long-term political legitimacy. Through insights from political philosophy, economics, history, and international relations, the book provides a fresh perspective on the challenges and possibilities shaping China's future trajectory.

APUサステイナビリティ観光学部　YOUN Seung Ho准教授の共著論文 “Do Geopolitical Crises Really Matter: The Response of Small Business Owners in the Tourism and Hospitality Sector in Jordan to the Adjacent Gaza–Israel Conflict”がAdministrative Sciences誌に掲載されました。

本研究は、ヨルダンにおいて、ホスピタリティ分野の小規模事業者が、近隣で発生しているガザ・イスラエル紛争による脅威に対し、地政学的な不安定性をどのように解釈し、それに対処しているのかを明らかにしたものです。
観光危機研究では、これまで主にマクロレベルでの影響や経営上の対応に焦点が当てられてきましたが、本研究では事業者の心理的プロセスに着目しました。半構造化インタビューを通じて分析した結果、紛争は必ずしも自動的に壊滅的な出来事として認識されるわけではなく、状況を有害・不確実・制御困難と捉える際に脅威として認識されることが明らかになりました。また、事業者は業務運営やマーケティングの見直しといった問題焦点型の対応に加え、前向きな再解釈や目標の再設定などの情動焦点型の対応も活用していました。
本研究は、危機に対する認知的評価のプロセスに着目することで、ホスピタリティ分野の危機研究に新たな視座を提供するとともに、地政学的に不安定な地域における小規模事業者のレジリエンス（回復力・適用力）強化に向けた実践的示唆を提示するものです。

A paper co-authored by Associate Professor YOUN Seung Ho of the APU College of Sustainability and Tourism, entitled “Do Geopolitical Crises Really Matter: The Response of Small Business Owners in the Tourism and Hospitality Sector in Jordan to the Adjacent Gaza–Israel Conflict” has been published in the Administrative Sciences.

This study examines how small hospitality business owners in Jordan cope with threats arising from the adjacent Gaza–Israel conflict. Tourism crisis research has largely focused on macro-level impacts and managerial responses, while less attention has been given to the psychological processes through which small business owners interpret geopolitical instability and develop coping responses. Drawing on the transactional theory of stress, appraisal, and coping, this study uses semi-structured interviews to explore owners’ perceptions and reactions. The findings show that conflict is not automatically viewed as catastrophic. Instead, threat emerges through person–environment transactions when owners perceive the situation as harmful, uncertain, or beyond their control. Owners employ both problem-focused coping, including operational and marketing adjustments, and emotion-focused coping, such as pragmatic optimism, positive reappraisal, goal resetting, and the normalization of instability. The study extends hospitality crisis research by highlighting cognitive appraisal and offers practical insights for strengthening small-business resilience in geopolitically unstable destinations.

佐藤 洋一郎教授の論文がAsia & the Pacific Policy Studies誌に掲載されました！/ Professor SATO Yoichiro Publishes in the Asia & the Pacific Policy Studies !

APUアジア太平洋学部　佐藤 洋一郎教授の単著論文 “US-Japan Alliance: Emmeshing Bilateralism Into Broader Multilateralism”がAsia & the Pacific Policy Studies誌に掲載されました。

本論文は21世紀のアジアにおける地政学的変化の中で、日本の安全保障戦略の役割を分析したものです。米日同盟が冷戦期の非対称的な関係から、より相互的で統合的なパートナーシップへと発展していることを示しています。また、日本が米日同盟を他国との安全保障協力ネットワークへと拡大し、東アジアの安全保障体制の変化を主導している点にも注目しています。一方で、中国への経済的依存や米国の関与の不確実性を背景に、日本がアジア全体を見据えた戦略的なリスク分散（ヘッジ）を進めていることを明らかにしています。

A paper single-authored by Professor SATO Yoichiro of the APU College of Asia Pacific Studies, entitled “US-Japan Alliance: Emmeshing Bilateralism Into Broader Multilateralism” has been published in the Asia & the Pacific Policy Studies.

This article examines the role of Japan’s security strategy amid geopolitical changes in twenty-first-century Asia. It argues that the U.S.–Japan alliance has evolved from an asymmetric Cold War relationship into a more reciprocal and integrated partnership. The article highlights Japan’s efforts to expand the alliance into a broader network of security cooperation with other countries and its leadership in shaping changes in East Asia’s security architecture. At the same time, it demonstrates that economic dependence on China and uncertainty surrounding future U.S. security commitments have encouraged Japan to pursue a strategic hedging approach aimed at diversifying risks while maintaining regional stability across Asia.

サステイナビリティ観光学部　久保 隆行教授の論文2件が国際学術誌へ掲載されました。

共著論文“Transforming Hot-Spring Cities into Innovation Hubs: A Comparative Cluster-Based Analysis of Beppu, Bath, and Vichy”は、“Regional Science Policy & Practice” に掲載されました。本研究では、別府市と英国バース市、フランス・ヴィシー市を比較し、温泉都市が観光依存型の地域から高付加価値な都市サービスクラスターへ発展する条件を分析しています。その結果、温泉資源の豊富さのみならず、行政や関係機関による協調的なガバナンス、都市ブランドの信頼性、医療・教育・ウェルネスなど関連サービス産業との連携が重要であることを明らかにしました。

また、単著論文 “Benchmarking Quality of Life and Urban Growth: Fukuoka among Globally Competitive Regional Cities”は “GeoJournal” に掲載されました。本研究では、福岡市を世界の主要な地域中核都市と比較し、生活の質（Quality of Life）と都市成長（Urban Growth）の両面から評価を行いました。分析の結果、福岡市は高い生活の質を維持しながら成長を続けている一方、国際的な連結性やイノベーションの面ではさらなる発展の余地があることが示されました。

これらの研究は、人口減少や環境制約が進む時代において、地域資源の活用や都市政策の工夫を通じた持続可能な都市発展のあり方に重要な示唆を与えるものです。

Professor KUBO Takayuki from the College of Sustainability and Tourism has had two papers published in international academic journals!

A co-authored paper entitled, “Transforming Hot-Spring Cities into Innovation Hubs: A Comparative Cluster-Based Analysis of Beppu, Bath, and Vichy,” was published in Regional Science Policy & Practice! This research compares the hot spring cities of Beppu, Bath in England, and Vichy in France, and analyzes the conditions under which hot-spring cities develop from tourism dependent regions to high-value added urban service clusters. The study found that in addition to the abundance of hot-spring resources, coordinated governance with local authorities and relevant organizations, the credibility of the city’s brand, and coordination with related service industries on health, education and wellness, are crucial factors.

Professor KUBO also authored a paper entitled, “Benchmarking Quality of Life and Urban Growth: Fukuoka among Globally Competitive Regional Cities,” which was published in Geojournal. This research compared Fukuoka City to other major global cities on quality of life and urban growth. The study demonstrates that whilst Fukuoka City maintains a high quality of life while continuing to develop, there is still room for growth in terms of international connectivity and innovation.

The research projects shared above provide important considerations for sustainable development through the utilization of local resources and innovative urban policy, during a time when population decline and environmental constraints are becoming increasingly prevalent.

アジア太平洋学部ゴトビ ナデル教授と、Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University医学部の Dr. ERBAY Hasan による共著論文 “Ars Longa, Data Brevis: the Science of Disease and the Art of Care” が、Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy Journal 誌に掲載されました。

本論文は、AIの発展によって医療の診断精度が向上する一方で、患者が「データ」として扱われ、その人の経験や語りが見えにくくなる危険性について論じています。論文では、「処理（Processing）」と「立ち会い・証言（Witnessing）」を区別する独自のモデルを提示し、AIは疾病の分析に優れる一方、苦痛や不安を伴う「病の経験」を理解することはできないと指摘しています。また、AI時代において医師は単なるデータ管理者ではなく、患者の語りに耳を傾け、意味を読み解く「文化的仲介者」としての役割を担うべきであると提唱しています。

Professor GHOTBI Nader Publishes in the Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy Journal!

Professor GHOTBI Nader of the APU College of Asia Pacific Studies co-authored a paper with Dr. ERBAY Hasan from the Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University, Faculty of Medicine, entitled, “Ars Longa, Data Brevis: the Science of Disease and the Art of Care,” has been published in the Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy Journal.

The article discusses the risk that while advances in AI improve the accuracy of medical diagnoses, there are also concerns that patients are treated merely as “data”, making their experiences and narratives less visible. The article offers a model that distinguishes between “Processing” and “Witnessing”, pointing out that whilst AI excels at analysing illnesses, it cannot understand the experience of illness, which involves things like pain or anxiety.

Furthermore, the article proposes that in the age of AI, doctors should not only act as data managers but should also take on the role of “cultural mediators”, that listen to patient concerns and interpret meanings.

APUアジア太平洋学部　夏田 郁教授の共著論文 “Japanese Automotive Industry under Carbon Neutrality: Multi-Pathway Strategy and Green Supply Chain Networks（カーボンニュートラル下における日本の自動車産業：マルチパスウェイ戦略とグリーンサプライチェーンネットワーク）”がアジア学分野で著名な学術誌 Journal of Contemporary Asiaに掲載されました。

本論文では、日本の自動車分野におけるカーボンニュートラル政策を分析し、日本政府と産業界が推進する「マルチパスウェイ戦略」および「グリーンサプライチェーン構築」に着目して、脱炭素化へのアプローチを検証しています。

また、走行時の排出だけでなく製造から廃棄までを含めたライフサイクルアセスメント（LCA）の重要性を指摘し、不確実性の高い脱炭素社会における現実的な政策の方向性と課題を提示しています。

Professor Kaoru Natsuda Publishes in the Journal of Contemporary Asia!

A paper co-authored by Professor Kaoru Natsuda of the APU College of Asia Pacific Studies, entitled “Japanese Automotive Industry under Carbon Neutrality: Multi-Pathway Strategy and Green Supply Chain Networks” has been published in the Journal of Contemporary Asia, a leading academic journal in the Asian Studies field!

The article analyzes carbon-neutral policies in the Japanese automotive sector and investigates decarbonization approaches, specifically focusing on the development of green supply chains and multi-pathway strategies promoted by the Japanese government and industrial sector.

Furthermore, the article highlights the importance of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which encompasses not only emissions while a vehicle is operating, but also the entire process from manufacturing to disposal, and sets out realistic policy directions and challenges for a decarbonized society, characterized by a high degree of uncertainty.

CHADHA Astha准教授の論文がThe Pacific Review誌に掲載されました！

APUアジア太平洋学部 CHADHA Astha准教授の論文 “India and its China agenda: collaboration amidst confrontation”が学術誌The Pacific Reviewに掲載されました。

本論文は、インドと中国の関係において、国境問題などを背景に地政学的な緊張関係が続いている一方で、経済的な結びつきや多国間の国際枠組みにおいては協力関係が維持されているのはなぜか、またそれが地域の安全保障にどのような影響を与えるのかを問うものです。

分析にあたっては、2014年以降のモディ政権下におけるインドの領土安全保障および経済安全保障政策を対象とし、ケーススタディおよび文書分析の手法を用いて検証し、両国関係の特徴とその含意について考察を行っています。

Associate Professor Astha Chadha Publishes in The Pacific Review

A paper by Associate Professor Astha Chadha of the College of Asia Pacific Studies (APS) at APU, titled “India and its China agenda: collaboration amidst confrontation” has been published in the international Q1 academic journal The Pacific Review.

This paper examines relations between India–China, focusing on how economic engagement and cooperation within multilateral institutions are maintained despite a backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly over territorial disputes, and the regional security implications they might have.

This analysis focuses on India’s territorial and economic security policies under the Modi administration since 2014. Using case studies and document analysis, it examines these policies and explores the characteristics of bilateral relations and their implications.

In collaboration with Michael T.H. Lai from the Rita Tong Liu School of Business and Hospitality Management at Saint Francis University in Hong Kong, and Motohiro Oribe from the Oribe Rheumachika Naika Clinic in Oita City, Japan, this paper, entitled, “Enhancing Travel Experiences for Tourists With Rheumatoid Arthritis: Insights From the Constraint-Effects-Mitigation Model”, sheds light on research gaps related to travel constraints for tourists, and analyzes the interrelationships among health constraints, negotiation strategies and priorities for tourists, specifically with rheumatoid arthritis. Utilizing the Constraint-Effects-Mitigation (CEM) model to analyze these variables, this research greatly contributes to the development of more effective marketing and product development strategies in the tourism industry for individuals with individual disabilities and chronic illnesses.

本論文“Enhancing Travel Experiences for Tourists With Rheumatoid Arthritis: Insights From the Constraint-Effects-Mitigation Model”（「関節リウマチを持つ旅行者の旅行体験をより良くするために：制約‐影響‐緩和（CEM）モデルに基づく考察」）は、香港のセントフランシス大学のLAI Michael Tin Hang准教授および大分市の織部リウマチ科内科クリニックの織部元廣院長による共著論文です。
これまでの観光研究は、インフラや安全性などに注目してきましたが、関節リウマチのような慢性疾患を持つ人の旅行の不便さや障壁はあまり研究されてきませんでした。
本研究では、関節リウマチのある旅行者について、健康上の制約・工夫（対処）・旅行意欲の関係を分析し、その結果、旅行意欲は「旅行への関わり」と「自分なりの工夫」の両方に影響され、特にこの“工夫”が重要な役割を果たすことが分かりました。
本研究は、慢性疾患を持つ旅行者という新たな市場理解と、観光分野での施策に役立つ知見を示しています。
