東洋大学ムスリム学生協会(Toyo University Muslim Association)は、東洋大学のムスリム学生が円滑で充実した学生生活を送れるよう支援するとともに、一般の学生にイスラム社会の文化を紹介する団体です。
当協会は、東洋大学の目指す国際的で多様性を尊重した環境の構築に貢献します。
東洋大学ムスリム学生協会は、2022年7月、東洋大学のムスリム学生有志によって設立されました。
○実績
・2022年7月にイード＝アル＝アドハー（犠牲祭）のパーティーを開催しました。
東洋大学文学部卒業で、日本ムスリム協会副会長のサイード佐藤氏による講演や、日本イスラーム文化センター（大塚マスジド）事務局長のクレイシ・ハールーン氏による講演、東洋大学のムスリム学生有志によるプレゼンテーションが行われ、IISO（インターナショナルイスラミーヤスクール大塚）の生徒や東洋大学のムスリム学生、そ
して、多くの一般の学生、教授など延べ100人以上が参加しました。食事も振る舞われ、楽しく有意義なパーティーとなりました。
○特徴
東洋大学は、国際学部国際地域学科の子島進教授をはじめとして、10年程前から大塚マスジドと交流があり、国際学部や社会学部の学生・教授が定期的に訪問するなど、協力関係が続いています。当協会は、この関係を活かし、大塚マスジドと緊密に連携します。また、日本ムスリム協会や他のモスク・ムスリムコミュニティ、さらに、TUICS（東京大学イスラム文化研究会）など、他大学のムスリムコミュニティとも協力し、強固に連携して活動を進めていきます。
○設立の背景と目的
東洋大学には、数多くののムスリム学生が在籍しています。しかし、学部・学科が異なることや、出身国が異なることから、知り合い同士の友好関係に留まり、ムスリム学生全体としては関係が希薄であるのが現状です。また、どれほどの数のムスリム学生がいるのか、正確に把握することができていません。
そこで、本協会の設立により、ムスリム学生の数・規模を把握するとともに、ヒヤリングや話し合いを通じて、ムスリム学生が抱える悩みや困っていることの解決を目指します。そして、ムスリム学生同士で親睦を深め、お互いに支え合えるような強固な協力関係を構築します。少人数だと対処が難しい困難も、多人数でお互いに助け合い、知恵を出し合い、一緒に行動することで、乗り越えることができるでしょう。
○活動内容
・ムスリム学生の東洋大学での生活が円滑で充実したものとなるようサポートします。
・多国籍のムスリム学生同士で友好関係を築き、結束を深めます。
・非ムスリム学生との交流を通じて相互理解を深めるとともに、イスラム社会の文化を紹介し、イスラームの考え方を伝えます。
・日本文化に対する理解を深め、日本での生活に関する知識を得ます。
・定期的にイベントを開催し、東洋大学の国際的で多様性を重視する環境の構築に貢献します。
・他大学のムスリム学生とも交流し、協力関係を構築します。
○課題の解決
東洋大学は他大学と比較して、ムスリム学生のための環境づくりが十分とは言えません。
そこで、食堂におけるハラール対応メニューの表示及び拡大、礼拝室・ウドゥー場の設置を目指し、学生部に交渉し、実現を促します。また一般の学生にも理解を促し、協力を仰ぎます。当協会は、ムスリム学生の快適で過ごしやすい環境構築のために尽力します。
当協会が大学に希望することは以下の３点です。（優先順に表記）
1、礼拝室の設置
ムスリムにとって、１日５回の礼拝は欠かすことのできない重要な信仰行為です。東洋大学では、８号館２階の留学生室の半分ほどのスペースを礼拝の場所として使用することができます。しかし、残りの半分のスペースは机と椅子が設置された一般の留学生の談話スペースとなっているため、時に礼拝に集中できなかったりするなど、肩身の狭い思いをしているのが現状です。また、礼拝場所の面積も小さく、礼拝スペースを確保するパーテーションも不十分で、一度に複数人が使用することは困難です。
これらの問題は、ムスリム専用の部屋の設置により解決できます。今の留学生室の面積と同程度、あるいはそれ以下で構わないので、ムスリムのための礼拝専用の部屋の設置を求め、大学側に掛け合います。
２、学食のメニュー表示の整備
ムスリムには、生活規範として避けなければならない食品が存在します。東洋大学の学食は、その充実具合から、日本一と呼び声が高いものの、アレルギー表示やハラールのメニューか否かの食品表示については、全くと言っていいほど整備されていません。例えば、６号館の食堂では、ボードにペンでメニューが書かれているだけのものも多く、英語表記のないメニューも多く存在します。また、アレルギー表示もなく、ハラール対応のメニューも数品しかありません。
ハラール対応のメニューの拡大を求めると同時に、メニューの写真、英語表記とともに、２８品目のアレルギー食材のマーク、ハラールであることを示すマークを導入し、視覚的に分かりやすいメニュー表示にすることを提案します。このことはムスリムに限らず、ベジタリアンやヴィーガン、ヒンドゥー教徒やユダヤ教徒など様々な食習慣をもつ人にとっても有益です。多様性を尊重した環境の構築を促します。
３、ウドゥー場の設置
礼拝には、ウドゥー（浄め）が必要です。ウドゥーでは、顔や腕、足に水をかける必要があります。トイレの洗面台で出来ないこともないですが、周りの目が気になることや、周囲に水が飛散してしまうことは避けられません。
ウドゥーのための設備があると安心してウドゥーを行えることから、ウドゥー場の設置を希望します。
○集団礼拝の実施
金曜礼拝を行うことや、時間を定めた集団礼拝の実施も考えています。
○将来の目標
MSAJ(Muslim Student Association Japan)や他大学のムスリムコミュニティとの連携に加え、イスラム諸国に限らず、あらゆる国・地域の大学のムスリムコミュニティと交流し、友好関係を築きます。
Toyo University Muslim Association is an organisation that supports the smooth and fulfilling student life of Toyo University Muslim students and introduces the culture of Islamic societies to the general student population. We contribute to the creation of an international and diversity-responsive environment that Toyo University aims to create. Toyo University Muslim Association was established in July 2022 by volunteer Muslim students of Toyo University.
○ Achievements
・An Eid-al-Adha (Sacrificial Festival) party was held in July 2022. A lecture was given by Sayyid Sato, a graduate of the Toyo University Faculty of Letters and Vice-President of the Japan Muslim Association, a lecture by Qureishi Haroon, Secretary General of the Japan Islamic Cultural Centre (Otsuka Masjid), and a presentation by volunteer Muslim students of Toyo University, and IISO ( International Islamiyah School Otsuka), Muslim students of Toyo University, and many ordinary students and professors. Dinner was also served, making it a fun and meaningful party.
○ Features
Toyo University has been in contact with the Otsuka Masjid for about 10 years, starting with Professor Susumu Kojima of the Department of International and Regional Studies in the Faculty of International Studies, and the students and professors from the Faculty of International Studies and the Faculty of Sociology visit regularly. We will also cooperate with the Japan Muslim Association, other mosques and Muslim communities, as well as Muslim communities at other universities, such as TUICS (The University of Tokyo Institute of Islamic Studies), and promote activities in strong cooperation with them.
○ Background and purpose of establishment
Toyo University has a large number of Muslim students. However, due to the different faculties and departments, as well as the different nationalities of the students, they only have friendly relations amongst acquaintances, and relations amongst Muslim students as a whole are currently weak. It is also difficult to ascertain exactly how many Muslim students there are. Therefore, through the establishment of this association, we aim to ascertain the number and size of Muslim students and, through hearings and discussions, to resolve the problems and difficulties that Muslim students are facing. We will then deepen our friendship with other Muslim students and build a strong cooperative relationship where we can support each other. By helping each other, sharing wisdom and working together, we will be able to overcome difficulties that would be difficult for a small group of people to deal with.
○ Activities
・We support Muslim students to make their life at Toyo University smooth and fulfilling.
・We will build friendly relations between Muslim students of different nationalities and deepen their bonds.
・We will deepen mutual understanding through exchanges with non-Muslim students, introduce the culture of Islamic societies and convey the Islamic way of thinking.
・We deepen our understanding of Japanese culture and gain knowledge about life in Japan.
・We organise regular events and contribute to building an international and diversity-oriented environment at Toyo University.
・We will interact and build cooperative relationships with Muslim students from other universities.
○ Problem solving
Compared to other universities, Toyo University does not have an adequate environment for Muslim students. We will negotiate with the Student Affairs Department to display and expand Halal menus in the cafeteria and set up a prayer room and wudu area, and encourage the realisation of these goals. We will also seek the understanding and cooperation of the general student population. We are committed to creating a pleasant and comfortable environment for Muslim students. We would like the university to do the following three things.(listed in order of priority)
1, Establishment of prayer rooms. For Muslims, praying five times a day is an indispensable and important act of faith. At Toyo University, about half of the space in the International Student Room on the second floor of Building 8 can be used as a place of prayer. However, the other half of the room is used as a common space for international students with desks and chairs, making it difficult for them to concentrate on praying. In addition, the prayer area is small and the partitions that secure the prayer space are inadequate, making it difficult for more than one person to use the room at a time. These problems can be solved by establishing a dedicated room for Muslims. We will approach the university to request the establishment of a dedicated prayer room for Muslims, which can be as small as or smaller than the current area of the international student room.
2, Improvement of menu labels in cafeterias. There are certain foods that Muslims must avoid as a way of life. Although Toyo University's cafeteria has been called the best in Japan for the quality of its food, there is no indication of allergies or whether the food is on the Halal menu or not. For example, in the cafeteria in Building 6, many of the menus are simply written in pen on a board, and there are also many menus without English labels. There are also no allergy labels and only a few Halal-compliant menu items. As well as calling for the expansion of Halal-compliant menus, it is proposed to introduce a mark for 28 allergenic ingredients and a mark indicating that the menu is Halal, along with pictures and English labelling on the menu, to make the menu display visually easy to understand. This is beneficial not only for Muslims, but also for people with different food habits, such as vegetarians, vegans, Hindus and Jews. It encourages the creation of an environment that respects diversity.
3, Establishment of an udhu place. Prayer requires an wudhu (purification). In wudhu, water needs to be sprinkled on the face, arms and legs. It is not impossible to do this at the toilet sink, but it is inevitable that people will be aware of their surroundings and that water will be splashed around. We would like to have a place for wudu because we can do wudu with peace of mind if there are facilities for wudu.
○ Conducting congregational prayers
We are also considering holding Friday prayers and timed collective prayers.
○ Future goals
In addition to cooperation with MSAJ (Muslim Student Association Japan) and the Muslim communities of other universities, we will interact and build friendly relations with the Muslim communities of universities in all countries and regions, not just those in Muslim countries.
