A research paper "Predictive validity of senior volunteer-led frailty check-up results for disability and mortality among community-dwelling older adults: a cohort study" from Prof. Katsuya Iijima’s group has been published at Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics.

[Key Points]
- Results from the Frailty Check-up, conducted by older community volunteers, were examined in relation to subsequent new certification for support or long-term care needs and mortality using administrative records from three municipalities in the Kanto region of Japan.
- A total of 3,476 community-dwelling adults aged 65 years or older were followed for a median of 1,088 days. During follow-up, 254 participants (7.3%) were newly certified as requiring support or long-term care, and 138 (4.0%) died.
- The greater the number of red-flag items among the 22 Frailty Check-up items, the higher the risk of new certification. Compared with participants with 0-4 red-flag items, the adjusted hazard ratio was 1.93 for those with 5-7 items and 2.93 for those with 8 or more items.
- Using a predicted probability derived from eight physical, oral, social, and cognitive indicators, the adjusted hazard ratio in the high-risk group was 5.39 for new certification and 1.94 for mortality.
- The Frailty Check-up is not a diagnostic test. However, the findings suggest that it may serve as an early, community-based entry point for identifying people at elevated risk and connecting them with health professionals and local support resources.

【論文】田中友規特任講師・飯島勝矢教授らの研究論文「Predictive validity of senior volunteer-led frailty check-up results for disability and mortality among community-dwelling older adults: a cohort study」がArchives of Gerontology and Geriatricsに掲載されました。

[Open Access Book] AI, Innovation, and Beyond: A Report from STS forum 2025

This Open Access book captures the essential ideas and strategic perspectives shared by global leaders in science and technology, business, and policymaking at the STS forum 2025 in Kyoto. Addressing cutting-edge issues in artificial intelligence, sustainability, health, and governance, it translates high-level dialogue into an accessible, evidence-based narrative that connects scientific credibility with social responsibility and business excellence.

Drawing on the Forum’s multi-stakeholder discussions, the book explores how AI is reshaping knowledge creation and transforming human development and societal transformation, offering forward-looking reflections on ethics, equity, creativity, and leadership. It serves both as a record of the Forum’s deliberations and as a practical guide for decision-makers, educators, and corporate innovators seeking to align technological progress with inclusive and sustainable futures.

A research paper "When one teaches, two learn: the bidirectional learning process between supervisors and PhD students" from Prof. Sotaro Shibayama’s group has been published at Economics of Innovation and New Technology.

In contexts involving supervisors and students, knowledge transfer is commonly assumed from the former to the latter. This paper challenges that assumption by investigating the bidirectional knowledge transfer between PhD students and their supervisors. We consider 40,852 PhD students who graduated in the STEM fields in France between 2010 and 2018. Focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI) knowledge transfer, we find that a student supervised by a supervisor with AI knowledge is 10 percentage points more likely to write a thesis in AI than a student supervised by a supervisor without AI knowledge, indicating an AI knowledge transfer from supervisors to students. We also find that a supervisor with no prior AI knowledge but exposed to a student with AI knowledge is 15 percentage points more likely to publish an article with AI content than a supervisor exposed to a student without AI knowledge, indicating an AI knowledge transfer from students to supervisors. These results confirm the bidirectionality of the learning process.
