Global Celebrations in Japan 2026 will be held, aligned with Global Celebrations of Imperial College London (ICL) on the Great Exhibition Road Festival in the UK. Dr. Kenji Wakabayashi who is in charge of the strategic alliance between Imperial and Science Tokyo will provide the lecture.

Dr Kenji Wakabayashi — Short Biography
Kenji Wakabayashi is Vice President at Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo), where he also serves as Professor, Chair of Intensive Care Medicine, and Director of the ICU at Science Tokyo Hospital.
He graduated in medicine from Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) in 2002 and, following paediatric residency training, entered the graduate programme in Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine and Intensive Care at Imperial College London in 2007, completing his PhD on acute respiratory distress syndrome under Professor Masao Takata in 2012. He subsequently held positions as Research Associate at Imperial.
Returning to Japan in 2013, he worked across medical education and paediatric intensive care, including at the National Center for Child Health and Development, before joining TMDU’s Department of Intensive Care Medicine in 2015. His contributions to UK–Japan collaboration in medicine were recognised by the Butterfield Award from the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation in 2015. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as Advisor to the Hospital Director from April 2020, established the Bed Management Centre in July 2020, and played a central role in shaping the hospital’s pandemic response strategy. He was appointed Professor and Chair of Intensive Care Medicine in October 2021, Vice President of TMDU in November 2022, and Vice President of the newly merged Institute of Science Tokyo in October 2024.
In his current strategic role, Wakabayashi leads Science Tokyo’s engagement with the University for International Research Excellence programme, building deep institutional partnerships with world-leading universities. His longstanding connection with Imperial — spanning research, postgraduate training, and the establishment and development of the MD–iBSc programme — forms the foundation of his vision for a broader UK–Japan collaborative ecosystem across academia, industry, and government.
