「菌類がステロールにアミノ酸を付ける仕組みを解明」
東京大学大学院理学系研究科の村山華子大学院生、伊藤弓弦准教授、濡木理教授らの研究グループは、フランス・ストラスブール大学などとの国際共同研究により、菌類の細胞膜に多く含まれる脂質エルゴステロールにアミノ酸を付ける酵素「ErdS」の仕組みを明らかにしました。ErdSは、通常はタンパク質合成で使われるtRNAを利用して脂質を修飾しますが、その詳しい働きはわかっていませんでした。本成果は、tRNAがタンパク質合成以外の反応にも利用される仕組みを示すものであり、菌類の細胞膜機能の理解や、新しい抗真菌薬の標的探索につながることが期待されます。プレスリリースは理学部ウェブでご覧ください。

「Elucidating How Fungi Attach Amino Acids to Sterols」
An international research group co-led by graduate student Hanako Murayama, Associate Professor Yuzuru Ito, and Professor Osamu Nureki from the School of Science at The University of Tokyo has clarified the mechanisms of ErdS, which has been known to modify lipids using tRNA normally used in protein synthesis. The results demonstrate how tRNAs are used for reactions other than protein synthesis, and are expected to lead to a better understanding of fungal cell membrane function and the search for new antifungal drug targets. 「最速でα崩壊するテルル104の寿命測定に成功」
東京大学大学院理学系研究科附属原子核科学研究センターの横山輪助教、東京大学大学院理学系研究科の北村徳隆助教らを含む共同研究グループは、非常に寿命の短い放射性同位体（RI）であるテルル104（104Te）のアルファ（α）崩壊を直接測定することに初めて成功し、その半減期が約7.2ナノ秒（1ナノ秒は10億分の1秒）であることを明らかにしました。本研究成果は、原子核におけるαクラスター構造の形成に対する理解を深めるとともに、魔法数近傍の核構造の解明にもつながるものです。プレスリリースは理学部ウェブでご覧ください。

【Press release】
「Successful lifetime measurement of tellurium 104, the fastest alpha-decaying」
A joint research group including Assistant Professor Rin Yokoyama and Assistant Professor Noritaka Kitamura from the School of Science at The University of Tokyo has succeeded in directly measuring the alpha (α) decay of tellurium-104 (104Te), a very short-lived radioisotope (RI), for the first time, and found that its half-life is approximately 7.2 nanoseconds (1 nanosecond is one billionth of a second). This achievement deepens our understanding of the formation of α-cluster structures in nuclei and also leads to the elucidation of nuclear structures in the vicinity of magic numbers. 「海洋生態系鉄循環における動物プランクトンの役割」
東京大学大学院理学系研究科の板井啓明准教授、高橋嘉夫教授らを中心とする共同研究グループは、外洋における海洋生態系の鉄循環における動物プランクトンの役割について、鉄安定同位体比を用いて明らかにしました。本研究の結果から、種別に分離された動物プランクトンの鉄要求量はバルク試料より低く、さらに顕著に低い鉄安定同位体比を持つことが示されました。外洋の生物一次生産はしばしば鉄制限されることが指摘されてきましたが、今回の研究成果から、海水と魚類を結ぶ鉄の動態に関して、重要な道筋を得ることができました。プレスリリースは理学部ウェブでご覧ください。

【Press release】
「Role of Zooplankton in Marine Ecosystem Iron Cycles」
A joint research group led by Associate Professor Takaaki Itai and Professor Yoshio Takahashi from the School of Science at The University of Tokyo has clarified the role of zooplankton in the iron cycle of marine ecosystems in the open ocean using iron stable isotope ratios. The results of this study showed that the iron requirements of zooplankton separated by species were lower than those of bulk samples, and that they had significantly lower iron stable isotope ratios. It has been pointed out that primary biological production in the open ocean is often limited by iron, and these research findings provide an important pathway regarding the dynamics of iron connecting seawater and fish. 「太陽の「生まれ」が与えたリン元素のボーナス」
松永典之（東京大学 大学院理学系研究科助教）らの研究グループは、太陽に似た星（太陽類似星）の観測から、銀河の中でリン の含有量の増え方が銀河内の時期と場所によって異なることを明らかにしました。今回の観測結果から、銀河の内側で早い時期に生まれた太陽は、現在の太陽近傍で生まれる太陽類似星と比べて、リンを多く含む環境で誕生したと考えられます。これは、太陽系が銀河の内側で生まれた結果として、生命をはぐくむための材料となるリン元素のボーナスを受け取っていたことを示す成果です。プレスリリースは理学部ウェブでご覧ください。

「Phosphorus elemental bonus given by the "birth" of the sun」
Assistant Professor Noriyuki Matsunaga from the School of Science at The University of Tokyo and his research group have revealed from observations of sun-like stars (solar-like stars) that the increase in phosphorus content in the galaxy varies with time and location within the galaxy. Based on the present observations, it is thought that the Sun, which was born earlier in the inner part of the galaxy, was born in a phosphorus-rich environment compared to solar-like stars born in the present solar neighborhood. This result indicates that the solar system received a bonus of the phosphorus element, the material for nurturing life, as a result of its birth in the inner part of the galaxy. 「Little blue buttons’ long journey」
A joint research group led by Project Researcher Daiki Wakita (JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow) and Associate Professor Kohei Oguchi from the School of Science at The University of Tokyo has successfully reared blue buttons (Porpita porpita), a species that drifts on the ocean surface, for up to 21 days. By analyzing their growth records, the researchers estimated that blue buttons can survive for several years in the harsh ocean surface environment. 「新開発の鉛ビームで探る「宇宙の錬金術」の舞台裏」
東京大学大学院理学系研究科の北村徳隆助教、鈴木大介准教授、今井伸明准教授らの共同研究グループは、新開発の鉛ビームを標的に衝突させて原子核を砕くこと（入射核破砕反応）で放射性同位元素（RI）をつくる実験を行い、セリウム（原子番号58）からレニウム（原子番号75）にわたる範囲で、17種の中性子が極端に多いRIと5種の陽子が極端に多いRIの計22種類の新原子核を発見しました。今後は、金やプラチナを生み出すrプロセスやpプロセスの解明など、われわれのルーツである「宇宙の錬金術」の舞台裏に迫る広大な原子核研究の新領域が開かれます。プレスリリースは理学部ウェブでご覧ください。

「Behind the Scenes of "Cosmic Alchemy" Explored by Newly Developed Lead Beam」
A joint research group including Assistant Professor Noritaka Kitamura, Associate Professor Daisuke Suzuki, and Associate Professor Nobuaki Imai from the School of Science at The University of Tokyo has discovered a total of 22 new nuclei in the range from cerium (atomic number 58) to rhenium (atomic number 75), including 17 radioisotopes with extremely high neutron abundance and 5 radioisotopes with extremely high proton abundance. In the future, a vast new field of nuclear research will open up that goes behind the scenes of the "cosmic alchemy" of our roots, including the elucidation of the r and p processes that give rise to gold and platinum. 東京大学大学院理学系研究科のTsai Hanshen特任助教、松田拓也特任助教（研究当時）、中辻知教授らを中心とする共同研究グループは、反強磁性体Mn₃Snを用い、40ピコ秒（ピコは1兆分の1）という極めて短い電気パルスによって磁気状態（2値）を書き換えられる、すなわち、スイッチングできることを示しました。本研究成果は、光信号を電気信号へ変換し、そのまま不揮発メモリへの書き込みに接続する「スピントロニクス光電変換」の基礎実証に相当します。プレスリリースは理学部ウェブでご覧ください。

「Non-volatile quantum switching devices operating at ultra-high speed and ultra-low power consumption」
A joint research group led by Project Professor Tsai Hanshen, Assistant Professor Takuya Matsuda (at the time of the research), and Professor Satoshi Nakatsuji from the School of Science at The University of Tokyo has demonstrated that the magnetic state (binary) of the antiferromagnetic material Mn₃Sn can be rewritten, or switched, using extremely short electrical pulses of 40 picoseconds (a picosecond is one trillionth of a second). This research represents a fundamental demonstration of "spintronics photoelectric conversion," which converts optical signals into electrical signals and directly connects them to writing to non-volatile memory. 「Efficient storage and retrieval of quantum operations」
A research group led by Professor Mio Murao from the School of Science at the University of Tokyo analytically solved the problem of finding the optimal estimation accuracy of isometry operations and showed that the estimation is limited by the standard quantum limit. By providing an example of quantum information processing that rigorously proves the superiority of quantum memory, this research is expected to influence guidelines for academic and industrial applications of quantum computers. 「Elucidating the reality of manganese oxidation that continues from the oxygen miniscule layer to the deep sea」
A joint research group led by Postdocotral Researcher Li Wenshuai (at the time of the research) and Professor Yoshio Takahashi from the School of Science at the University of Tokyo, conducted a detailed vertical analysis of the cerium (Ce) stable isotope ratio δ142Ce in seawater and manganese crusts in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. They revealed that manganese (Mn) oxide formation proceeds continuously from the oxygen minimum (OMZ) to the deep sea. This result will greatly advance our understanding of Mn circulation and the behavior of rare earth elements in the ocean, and is expected to have applications in elucidating the formation process of seabed mineral resources and as a new geochemical tracer for reconstructing past marine environments. 「Discovery of a novel factor regulating transcriptional repression」
A research group led by Project Researcher Shusei Mori, Associate Professor Soichi Inagaki, and Professor Emeritus Professor Tetsuji Kakutani from the School of Science at The University of Tokyo, using the plant Arabidopsis thaliana, has revealed that the novel factor MBD8 is required for transcriptional repression by H3K9 dimethylation. This function of MBD8 is expected to be conserved in other plants, and the results of this study will contribute to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which plants repress transcription and the developmental processes and environmental response mechanisms that are regulated by this repression.
