Sophia University is proud to announce the appointment of 13 new Emeritus Professors.

This title is conferred on retired faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to research, education, and the academic community, following a formal selection process. To date, more than 460 former professors have been recognized with this distinction.

In AY2026, 11 faculty members were awarded the title from Sophia University, and two from Sophia University Junior College Division. The conferral ceremony was held on May 13.

We are pleased to congratulate Professor Atsuko Nagai of the Department of French Literature on receiving the Chevalier of the French Order of Arts and Letters, awarded in recognition of her contributions to twentieth-century French literary studies and to Franco-Japanese cultural exchange🇯🇵🇫🇷
