Veterinary Epidemiology, Rakuno Gakuen University/ 酪農学園大学獣医疫学 Problem-Oriented research and One Health serving for food safety, zoonoses and animal health in Japan and developing countries

This research unit is lead by Professor Kohei Makita. He has wide experiences as a field vet in Japan and Nepal, and studied PhD at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He has work experience in the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and was involved in food safety and zoonoses projects in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Now the team is working on diverse issues in Japan as well, using risk assessment and veterinary epidemiology.

This paper discusses emergency surveillance during outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza. It highlights how the implications vary greatly depending on the characteristics of the virus strain and emphasizes the importance of improving the detection sensitivity through reports from farms.
