The UST Department of English and Institute of Religion of the Pontifical, Royal, and Catholic University of Santo Tomas in collaboration with the AILA Research Network on Migration Linguistics is organizing the Symposium on Migration, Theology, and Language on September 28, 2026. The symposium discusses the Catholic response to the challenges of contemporary migration. Registration details will be announced soon.

Language continues to play a central role in migrants’ experiences and in the broader concerns surrounding migration. Accordingly, the emerging field of migration linguistics is committed not only to advancing scholarly knowledge but also to informing policy and practice.

The Migration and Language Policy Brief draws on research findings and practical insights to formulate evidence-based policy recommendations. It welcomes contributions from researchers, practitioners, stakeholders, and policymakers, reflecting the field’s commitment to bridging research, practice, and policymaking. Each policy brief represents a contribution of migration linguistics to public policy and, ultimately, to improving the lives of migrants.

Policy briefs are published by invitation. Unsolicited contributions may also be referred to the Editorial Board for consideration.

The Migration and Language Policy Brief is published biannually by The The Migration Linguistics Initiative Initiative at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in collaboration with the International Association for Migration Linguistics and the Migration Linguistics Research Network of the International Association of Applied Linguistics.

The Philippines is the ninth-largest country of origin of international migrants in the world, and research on Filipino migrants has consequently flourished across various disciplines. Yet studies on internal migration within the Philippines remain relatively limited.

This special issue, ‘Migration Linguistics in the Philippines’, turns attention to the language experiences of internal migrants and the linguistic dimensions of mobility within the country. The collection brings together papers written by doctoral students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, developed through what was the country’s first course in migration linguistics.

We are deeply grateful to the Philippine Journal of Linguistics and the Linguistic Society of the Philippines for their continued support of migration linguistics and for helping advance this growing field of scholarship.
