Overseas Training Program at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM)

Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for comprehensive cooperation with the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) in August 2023, Fukuoka Institute of Technology (FIT) has conducted an overseas training program at UHM for sophomore students every year as part of a four-year special support initiative under the Global Challenge Program (GCP). The GCP aims to cultivate global talent. During the 2025 academic year, we sent nine students from the third GCP cohort (five from the Faculty of Engineering and four from the Faculty of Information Engineering) to UHM for a 15-day study abroad program from Sunday, March 1, 2026, to Sunday, March 15, 2026.

During the program, the students intensively improved their English skills through a customized program offered by the English Language Education Department at UHM (The Hawaiʻi English Language Program/HELP). Additionally, by auditing various courses in the College of Engineering, the students deepened their practical learning through an interdisciplinary approach. The GCP places great importance on fostering an innovative mindset that drives positive change from the perspectives of the past, present, and future. As part of this effort, the students participated in peace education activities and visited Pearl Harbor and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl). Additionally, students attended a talk session where they learned about the aloha spirit from Mr. Max Malmud (TOMODACHI Alumni Regional Framework Hawaii Regional Representative), and paid a visit to the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu. There, they received words of encouragement based on life stories from professionals active on the global stage, including Deputy Consul General Haruta (a native of Fukuoka Prefecture) and Vice Consul Tabira.

The proactive approach to learning that the UHM students demonstrated, along with the many insights and lessons they gained through interactions with local stakeholders, are expected to contribute to their future growth and success. We look forward to seeing their future achievements as they apply the knowledge they gained through their attitude toward learning, and their interactions with stakeholders. We would like to express our gratitude to Dean Brennon Morioka of the College of Engineering, Associate Dean Song Choi, and all the other stakeholders who supported this overseas training program, a turning point in the students’ lives. New Singapore Training Program Held at Temasek Polytechnic

From Monday, March 23, to Monday, March 30, 2026, we at Fukuoka Institute of Technology, sent five students (four from the Faculty of Engineering and one from the Faculty of Information Engineering, three first-year students and two second-year students) to Temasek Polytechnic (TP) to participate in the new Singapore training program, the "SAIL Program." Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on academic exchange in April 2024, this program is a new initiative with TP.

We have conducted mutual internship exchanges with TP in the past. The program is designed to enable students, even those experiencing their first overseas trip, to participate with confidence. It aims to foster a competency that will lead to career development in a global environment. A key factor in making this an exceptional learning experience for our students was the active participation of students from the Japanese Culture Group (JCG), a student organization supported by TP’s International Office. These students participated in English workshops led by the Centre for Life Skills faculty, and took on the role of managing and organizing activities throughout the program. In an environment where participants deepened their mutual understanding through discussion and sharing values and perspectives, students who had previously felt anxious about their English skills were able to strengthen their English proficiency as a tool for global communication. This enhanced their global mindset and cross-cultural understanding in a multicultural society.

Additionally, at TP’s AI-enabled educational facility, Interactive Digital Experiments with AI Studio/IDEAS, which is based on Singapore’s National AI Strategy (NAIS) 2.0, we learned firsthand the active uses of generative AI in a real-world setting at the AI Studio. Furthermore, we attended a presentation (Glocal Hearts, Glocal Action) summarizing the annual activities of student groups supported by TP’s International Relations. Witnessing student leaders of their own generation deliver excellent presentations on the achievements of their glocal initiatives and plans for the new academic year provided our students with a tangible opportunity to experience the importance of improving their English proficiency.

At the conclusion of the training, our students gave an English presentation, introducing "Fukuoka NOW". The presentation covered startup support as a National Strategic Special Zone and initiatives related to Japan’s first osmotic power generation facility.
Through the SAIL Program (Student Advancement through International Learning), our students cultivated global competency and forged friendships. We look forward to their future endeavors.

We are pleased about this first collaborative program with TP and would like to express our gratitude to Director Lim Teng Leng of the TP International Relations for welcoming the initiative.
We would also like to thank Assistant Manager Mariam Cheok for her warm and thoughtful support of the students throughout the program management, as well as Mr. Paul Davidson of the Centre for Life Skills, the students of JCG, and all other parties involved who made the program possible.
