Ecological practice around Mt. Fuji was held on August 6-9, 2026. There were 23 participants (undergraduate and graduate students) from 12 universities across Japan.

Fuji Branch (August 6)
We learned about the vegetation and ecology around the tree line near the 5th Station of Mt. Fuji, as well as the ecology of the subalpine mixed coniferous forest. We were lucky to have such good weather, which allowed us to clearly observe the characteristic vegetation and the Hoei Crater. Thanks in part to the excellent weather and views, many participants said that this was the most interesting activity of the four-day program.

South Alps Branch (August 7)
In the morning, we learned about the geological formation and characteristics of the area around Mt, Yamainudan, as well as erosion control work carried out at the large-scale landslide area known as Hokinagi. Fortunately, we were able to observe the entire Hokinagi area this time. In the afternoon, we explored the major tree species of the forest, particularly those belonging to the Sapindaceae and Betulaceae families, and learned about the ecology of cool-temperate forests. Although we were caught in a brief shower in the evening, we managed to have the participants observe the vegetation inside the deer-exclusion fence, where the bamboo grass had grown considerably.

Tenryu Branch (August 8)
We left the Yamainudan dormitory in the morning and headed to the Tenryu Branch. In the afternoon, we learned about the major tree species that make up warm-temperate evergreen forests and conducted a vegetation survey in the Kannon Forest. By considering the characteristics of Kannon Forest, we also learned about the vertical structure of forests. Many participants said that identifying tree species had been challenging; nevertheless, everyone was actively engaged in the activities, using a plant database of the Experiment Forest prepared by the staff.

Tenryu Branch (August 9)
In the morning, we learned about the ecological restoration of planted forests through visits to thinning areas and the SSS. We also surveyed the understory vegetation in forest compartments with relatively high and low deer abundance, and learned about the relationship between deer and forest vegetation. Since the deer density in Tenryu is not particularly high, it seemed that deer used areas more frequently where the understory vegetation was especially abundant.

One of the highlights of this practice is that participants can visit warm-temperate forests, cool-temperate forests, and the tree line over the course of four days. This year again, participants came from all over Japan, and many commented that they enjoyed the opportunity to learn about plants in forests that they would not normally have a chance to observe. I think the good weather and relatively mild temperatures in Tenryu allowed us to stay focused and have a meaningful and rewarding experience. Thank you all for staying engaged throughout the entire program!

From July 12 to July 16, we conducted a short-term program for undergraduate students from Airlangga University in Indonesia. Fifteen students with interests in ecology and the environment participated in this program. Its primary objective was to introduce participants to Japan's approaches to forest and watershed management, as well as their relationships with local communities.

July 13: In the morning, Prof. Yokota from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences gave a lecture on how forest resources can contribute to regional economic development, using examples such as furniture production and other forest-based industries. In the afternoon, we visited the field, where students learned about the importance of thinning in plantation management and were introduced to the major tree species that constitute warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved forests. Although most of the students had little experience identifying tree species based on leaf morphology, they enthusiastically participated and seemed to enjoy learning through a quiz-style approach.

July 14: We visited "Shiraito Forest Works" in Fujinomiya City. During the morning session, students learned about sustainable forest management using line thinning through conducting vegetation surveys. In the afternoon, they took part in planting broad-leaved tree saplings in a clear-cut area. Although the weather was extremely hot, the students worked hard and successfully planted the saplings. Many students described this day's activities as the highlight of the program in the post-program questionnaire.

July 15: The morning began with a lecture on wildlife management, focusing particularly on sika deer, followed by hands-on work assisting with the installation of a deer-exclusion fence. Despite the hot weather and the steep terrain, the students successfully completed the entire process, including setting fence posts, attaching the netting, and securing it to the ground with pegs. In the afternoon, the students gave presentations based on what they had learned throughout the program. Their task was to compare forest management practices and related issues in Japan and Indonesia and propose ideas that could be applied in each country. The presentations covered a wide range of topics, including forest recreation, landslide prevention, and wildlife management. The students also engaged in lively discussions with graduate students from Shizuoka University and representatives of local forestry organizations.

This was the first time this program had been offered and represented our initial attempt to provide an introductory program in forest science and forest management specifically for international students. According to the post-program questionnaire, the participants were highly satisfied with the experience. Building on this encouraging feedback, we hope to continue refining and expanding the program in collaboration with local forestry companies and organizations so that we can offer an even more engaging and rewarding learning experience in the future.

We conducted a special class for 12 students of Kamiatago Elementary School in grades 1-6 on the mammals living around their school. The students were especially excited to learn about male Japanese sika deer with their large antlers and Japanese badgers that repeatedly visit communal latrine sites. In contrast to the results of our previous camera-trap survey, no Japanese hares were filmed this time, highlighting that the mammal community around the school has changed over the past few years.

On May 21-22, students visited the Tenryu Branch to observe trees and fungi, as part of the "Collaborative Works I" of the Faculty of Global Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation. Unfortunately, rain on the first day prevented us from conducting vegetation surveys in the field, so the session was held indoors instead. However, participants had the opportunity to develop their skills in identifying tree species by examining cut branches. It was particularly impressive to see everyone enthusiastically searching for fungi while also listening attentively to the explanations provided by the experts.

From April 25 to 26, "Collaborative Works I" of the Faculty of Global Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation was held at the Tenryu Branch. The purpose of this class is to foster co-creation between students and local stakeholders (including municipal governments, forestry organizations, forestry professionals, and NPOs) to explore solutions to regional challenges and promote sustainability. On the first day, the program began with a safety briefing for fieldwork activities. Participants then observed forest vegetation and experienced operating drones, one of the technologies used in modern forestry. It has been about five years since drone operation was added to the practice menu, yet it continues to elicit fresh and enthusiastic reactions from participants. On the second day, participants learned about the forestry workflow through hands-on activities such as pruning, thinning, and weeding. Participants learned firsthand about the difficulties and physical demands associated with working at heights and performing tasks on steep slopes while carrying heavy tools. We hope that the knowledge and experience gained through this program will be useful as participants interact with professionals involved in in forest management and forestry.

A landslide occurred a few days ago at Hokinagi, one of the principal field sites in the South Alps Branch. This area known as "Hokinagi" had remained relatively stable over the past two decades at roughly 10 hectares in size. However, this latest event appears to have expanded the affected area by approximately 0.3-0.5 hectares.

The collapse occurred on a steep ridge directly below the peak known as Hacchodan-no-Atama. A substantial amount of sediment discharge has already been observed. According to a faculty member specializing in erosion control engineering, the effects of this event are likely to trigger frequent debris flows within the watershed for several years to come.

I had been working frequently in a forested area directly across from the site during the one or two weeks before the event, searching for tree species to sample. During that time, I happened to take several photographs of the slope. Those photographs now offer a rare and striking before-and-after record of the landslide.

(https://wwp.shizuoka.ac.jp/agr-fc-forecol/?p=604)

Practice of Field science II was held at the Tenryu Branch on 17th and 18th May (https://wwp.shizuoka.ac.jp/agr-fc-forecol/?p=604). Nineteen 1st year students from the Faculty of Agriculture participated in the practice. We conducted various menus to learn the basics of forest science.

On the first day, we observed a variety of tree species growing in the experimental forest. Students trained in identifying tree species based on leaf morphology using a plant database of the experiment Forest prepared by the staff. Everyone enthusiastically collected leaves, so we ended up finding many more species than we had expected. We also had an opportunity to experience drone operation near a clear-cut site. In the evening, we set up Sherman traps for rodent surveys and collected soil and leaf litter samples for observing soil fauna.

The second day began with checking the Sherman traps. Unfortunately, no mice had been captured... We then hurried back to the lodge and observed soil fauna using a simple Tullgren apparatus. This time, the results showed no clear differences in the soil animal communities between the broadleaf forest and the cypress (hinoki) plantation. We discussed why such results were obtained.

The weather was excellent throughout the program, and I believe everyone was able to enjoy learning while engaging in activities within the forest.
