🏢 Under the “Under One Roof” principle at Science Knot, the well-being and safety of our members and everyone who uses the building are among our key priorities.

❤️‍🩹 As part of our efforts to create a safer environment, a new AED (Automated External Defibrillator) has been installed at Science Knot. We were also pleased to welcome a team of medical professionals to provide practical training on how to use an AED and respond effectively in an emergency to WPI-SKCM2 members on Sep 16.

🩺 The session began with an introduction to AED use and emergency response, followed by hands-on training where participants practiced using an AED under the guidance of the medical team.

🛡️Through initiatives like this, we hope to ensure that everyone under the Science Knot roof can feel safer and better prepared to respond when every second counts.

🏢 Science Knotでは、「Under One Roof」の理念のもと、Science Knotを利用するすべての方が安心して過ごせる環境づくりを大切にしています。

❤️‍🩹 その一環として、Science Knotに新たにAED（自動体外式除細動器）が設置されました。9月16日には、医療専門家の皆さまをお迎えし、AEDの使い方や緊急時の対応について講習会を実施しました。

🩺 講習では、AEDの基本的な使い方や救急時の対応について学んだ後、実際にAEDを使い、医療専門家の指導を受けながら、緊急時を想定した対応を体験しました。

🛡️ もしものときに、落ち着いて、迅速に対応できるように。これからも、Science Knotに集う皆さんが安心して過ごせる環境づくりに取り組んでいきます。

📢 CEMS Topical Meeting on Chirality in Condensed Matter Physics

The RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science (CEMS) will host the CEMS Topical Meeting on Chirality in Condensed Matter Physics from October 19 to 21, 2026, at RIKEN.

🌀 The meeting will focus on recent developments in chirality in condensed matter physics, including chiral systems, chiral phonons, magnetic crystalline systems, and related transport and optical phenomena. The meeting will bring together researchers to discuss these topics from both experimental and theoretical perspectives.

🤝 WPI-SKCM² is a supporting organization of the meeting.

🕊️On the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, WPI-SKCM² members joined a Peace Tour to reflect on the importance of peace and the role science can play in contributing to a more peaceful future.

Participants visited the Yamato Museum, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and monuments and exhibits throughout Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, before taking part in the traditional tōrō nagashi (lantern floating) ceremony.🏮

💬Reflecting on the experience, Vijay Pratap Singh, a postdoctoral researcher from India, and Tansilu Altay, a doctoral student from Tatarstan, shared how the tour deepened their understanding of the history of war and peace and encouraged them to consider how they, as scientists, can contribute to building a more peaceful future.

Through opportunities like this, WPI-SKCM² hopes to foster dialogue and reflection across cultures and backgrounds while reaffirming our shared commitment to peace. 🕊️

🕊️ 「広島原爆の日」である8月6日、WPI-SKCM²メンバーが平和学習ツアーに参加し、平和の大切さや、より平和な未来に向けて科学が果たせる役割について考えを深めました。

大和ミュージアム、広島平和記念資料館を訪れたほか、広島平和記念公園内のさまざまな碑や展示を見学し、夕暮れには「とうろう流し」に参加しました。🏮

💬 ツアーをふり返り、インド出身のポスドク研究員 Vijay Pratap Singhさんとタタールスタン出身の博士課程学生 Tansilu Altayさんは、戦争と平和の歴史への理解を深めるとともに、科学者として、より平和な未来の実現にどのように貢献できるのかを考えるきっかけになったと語りました。

それぞれの経験や思いを分かち合いながら、平和についてともに考える。こうした学びの機会を、これからも大切にしていきます。 🕊️

8月19日、キラルノット理科教室「電子顕微鏡で見えるカタチ～分子ってなに？キラリティってなに？～」を開催しました。多くの小・中学生にご参加いただき、光学顕微鏡や電子顕微鏡を使った体験を通して、顕微鏡の世界に触れていただきました。🔬✨

Science Knot内にある「日本電子×広島大学 Knotted Room」では、最先端の透過電子顕微鏡（TEM）を見学し、研究者が原子や分子の世界をどのように観察・研究しているのか、その一端に触れる貴重な機会となりました。

本イベントを通して、子どもたちが目を輝かせながら科学を楽しむ姿を見ることができ、私たちも大変うれしく思います。WPI-SKCM²はこれからも、次世代を担う子どもたちが科学をより身近に感じ、科学の世界への興味や好奇心を育む活動を続けてまいります！🌟

On August 19, the Chiral Knot Science Class, titled “電子顕微鏡で見えるカタチ～分子ってなに？キラリティってなに？～” (Shapes Revealed by Electron Microscopy: What Are Molecules? What Is Chirality?), was successfully held with the enthusiastic participation of elementary and junior high school students! 🔬✨

During the event, students explored the fascinating world of microscopy through hands-on activities using optical and electron microscopes. They also had the opportunity to visit the JEOL × Hiroshima University Knotted Room in Science Knot and see its state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope (TEM), offering them a glimpse into how researchers observe and investigate the world of atoms and molecules.

We were delighted to see the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the event. WPI-SKCM² will continue our efforts to bring science closer to the younger generation and inspire their curiosity and interest in scientific discovery! 🌟

We are delighted to share that Elizabeth Dresselhaus, Co-PI at WPI-SKCM² and Naeimeh Bahrilaleh, Postdoctoral Researcher have received the Hiroshima University Award for Encouraging Female Researchers for Academic Year 2026! 👏

Their achievements highlight the exciting research being pursued at WPI-SKCM² and the important contributions of women researchers to science.
