32Nd Online Global Citizenship Seminar

(A True Picture of Evgenia Medvedeva: Online Tea & Talk from Russia),

Figure Skater Evgenia Medvedeva Speaks at 32nd Online Global Citizenship Seminar

On January 20, Tokai University held its 32nd Online Global Citizenship Seminar, “A True Picture of Evgenia Medvedeva: Online Tea & Talk from Russia.” This seminar series, organized by the Head Office of International Affairs, features lectures on various topics given completely in English by outside guests or Tokai students, faculty, and staff with the goal of promoting the campus’ internationalization. For this seminar, Tokai invited figure skater Ms. Evgenia Medvedeva, a silver medalist in both individual and team events at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics whose love of Japan is well-known. This event was a representation of more than four decades of exchange between Tokai and Russia as well as Tokai’s recent achievement of being selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Inter-University Exchange Project (Russia). Around 500 people watched the event. Ms. Medvedeva participated virtually from Russia, answering questions about her experiences as a world-class athlete.

Tokai University Vice Chancellor Naoto Yoshikawa opened the event with a greeting and an overview of the historical ties between Tokai and Russia. The moderator then began asking Ms. Medvedeva various questions on topics such as why she began figure skating, university life in Russia, her impressions of Japan when she visited for tournaments, how countries should support athletes, and improving quality of life (a key driver of Tokai’s educational research).
Ms. Medvedeva gave thorough answers to each question, commenting, “My hometown is not just the place where I grew up – wherever I go, if there is a person I love there, that is a place I can call my home. From the point of view of a figure skater, Russia as a country provides a great deal of support, and the type of support changes depending on your level from beginner through advanced, so you can say that the quality of life is high.” She also described her life in Canada, where she practices, and her love of Japanese anime.

Ms. Medvedeva also happily answered questions from elementary school students in the audience, such as “How do you learn choreography?” and “Is there a way to stop being afraid of jumps?” At the end of the event, Tokai University Chancellor Kiyoshi Yamada thanked Ms. Medvedeva and asked her, “When you communicate with Japanese skaters, do you speak in English?” Ms. Medvedeva replied, “Tomoko Miyahara and Yuzuru Hanyu are very good at English. I never have trouble communicating with them.” Yamada then told her, “If you ever want to study in Japan, please come to Tokai University. We wish you much success in the future.”
