Over three sessions in April and May, 14 of our students shared their experiences studying abroad and taking part in various international activities in Japan and overseas. They talked about what they experienced, what they learned, and how these opportunities helped them grow. 🇺🇸🇯🇵 This week, we were excited to welcome 22 visitors from the USA to our classes on Wednesday and Thursday!They watched student presentations, joined discussions, and enjoyed many conversations with our students. 今週の水曜日と木曜日、アメリカから22名の訪問者のみなさんが授業に参加してくださいました！ 学生のプレゼンテーションを見学したり、ディスカッションに参加したり、たくさんの会話を楽しんだりしました。🌎✨ It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to use authentic English, communicate with new people, and build their confidence and language skills. 学生たちにとって、実際の英語を使って交流し、自信やコミュニケーション力を高める素晴らしい機会となりました。💬📚 A big thank you to all of our visitors for spending time with us — we hope to see you again someday! お忙しい中、私たちと時間を過ごしてくださった訪問者のみなさん、本当にありがとうございました！またお会いできることを楽しみにしています。

Let’s Grow Vegetables! Our Seminar Project Begins!

This week, students from Mr. Zitzmann & Mr. Swanson’s seminar groups started an exciting new community project near Hiraodai in Kitakyushu! 🇯🇵✨今週、ツィッツマン先生とスワンソン先生のゼミ学生たちが、北九州市・平尾台近くの農地で新しい地域貢献プロジェクトをスタートしました！🇯🇵✨ We spent the afternoon preparing the farmland and planting satsumaimo (sweet potatoes) 🍠 and pumpkins 🎃 together. Over the coming months, the students will continue cultivating the crops until harvest time in October. 学生たちは今週、畑の準備を行い、さつまいも🍠とかぼちゃ🎃の苗植えをしました。これから10月の収穫まで、みんなで協力しながら育てていきます。 Our goal is to use the vegetables to make homemade soup for the school festival, with all profits being donated to a local charity group....

2026 English Camp

English Camp 2026 was held on May 8–9 with all Year 1 & 2 Department of English students and staff participating together! This year, we were also joined by a lecturer and two graduate students from Vancouver Island University 🇨🇦 Our destination was the beautiful Nishinagato Resort Hotel, surrounded by the sea with the famous Tsunoshima Bridge in the background. Visit to the Kitakyushu Water Environment Museum

今日は教育ボランティアの授業のフィールドワークで北九州市水環境館に行ってきました！ここは紫川の歴史や生態について学べる施設で、川に生息する生き物を無料で見学することができます。生息域ごとに分けられた展示は水族館のようで、大人も子供も楽しめる内容でした！特に印象に残ったのは、大きなガラス窓から実際の紫川の様子を見ることができたことです。そこから天然の魚たちが泳いでいるのが見えて、とても興味深かったです。小倉のことを学びながら、生き物についても楽しく学べる、とても良い経験になりました✨ Today, I went on a fieldwork activity for my educational volunteer class to the Kitakyushu Water Environment Museum! This facility lets you learn about the history and ecosystem of the Murasakigawa. You can also see river creatures for free, and the exhibits are organized by habitat, making it feel like a small aquarium—both adults and children can enjoy it. What impressed me the most was the large glass window where we could actually observe the real river....

Welcoming Our New Students: A Memorable Start

Last week we were very happy to meet our new intake of students. After a graduation ceremony and a chance for the teachers to meet their parents, the students have spent the last few days doing placement tests, orientations, and meeting their advisors. The weather hasn't been so nice, but the cherry blossom has been gorgeous! We were very happy to meet you all, and we are looking forward to the next four years together!

Student Exchange Project and Study Tour Between Seinan Jo Gakuin University and Ferris Jo Gakuin University

西南女学院大学とフェリス女学院大学の「学生交流に関する協定」の締結を記念し、両大学の学生が相互の街（横浜と北九州）を訪れるスタディツアー「海と空でつなぐ学びの交流プログラム」を開催しました。 【３日間の主なプログラム内容】 1日目：フェリス女学院大学への訪問と横浜のフィールドワークフェリス女学院大学を訪問し、学長講話やキャンパスツアーを通して相互理解を深めました。その後、横浜でのフィールドワークを経て、東京九州フェリーで横須賀港から新門司港へ出航しました。 2日目：船上での実践的な学びと交流乗船時間を活用し、一般乗客もご参加いただけるイベントを開催しました。英語学科による北九州市の魅力を紹介するプレゼンテーションやフェリス女学院大学音楽学科による船内コンサート、観光文化学科によるフェリーを活用した旅行プランを考えるグループワークなどを行いました。 3日目：協定調印の記念式と北九州市のフィールドワーク西南女学院大学にて両大学間の協定調印記念式を執り行いました。その後、門司港レトロ地区のフィールドワーク、北九州空港の特別ツアーを実施しました。 今後、両大学間では多様な連携を深めてまいります。参加した学生の感想を以下に紹介します。 フェリス女学院大学との学生交流プロジェクトでは、北九州の魅力をどのように分かりやすく伝えるかを考えながら活動しました。映画のロケ地やグルメなど地域の魅力を発信する中で、相手の立場に立って伝え方を工夫することの大切さを実感しました。同じ女子大学生としてプロジェクトを通じた交流を楽しむことができました。初めて訪れた横浜や、門司港の魅力を改めて知ることができ、空港の滑走路で航空機の離着陸を間近で見るなど、充実した学びの多いプロジェクトでした。— Saya (英語学科３年生) 二つの学校の方針や学校の雰囲気の違いを、実際にそれぞれの学校を訪れることで感じることができました。普段は自分の大学の環境しか知らないため、他の大学の学生生活や考え方に触れることができたことは、とても新鮮で貴重な経験でした。船内でのプロジェクト活動では、フェリス女学院大学の学生と協力して意見を出し合いながら取り組むことができ、交流を深める良い機会になりました。さらに、横浜や門司港を一緒に散策する中でもたくさん交流することができ、お互いの大学生活や地元の話などを共有できたことがとても楽しかったです。この経験を通して、新しい出会いや価値観に触れることの大切さを改めて感じました。— Karen (英語学科２年生)

Presentation at the RCE Youth Conference

神戸大学で行われたRCEユース会議に出席しました。RCEとはRegional Centre for Expertise on Education for Sustainable Developmentの略で、国連大学が認定する持続発展教育の地域の拠点で、北九州もその一つなので、私たちもユースメンバーとして活動しています。今年は「交差する知と実践〜ユース・実践者・研究者が描くESDのこれから〜」がテーマで、講演やポスターセッション、ワークショップ等に参加しました。日本中のESDを実践している研究者、行政官、起業家、学生などが出席されていて、多様な立場の方々と交流する貴重な機会となりました。私たちはポスターセッションでアジア太平洋地域のユースと行なった模擬国連についてと、ゴミを拾いながらジョギングを行うプロギングというイベントについて発表を行いました。他の参加者と意見交換を行う中で、多様な考え方や実践に触れることができました。本活動を通して、SDGsやESDへの理解が深まるとともに、社会課題を自分ごととして捉える意識や、主体性・協働の大切さを学びました。今回の経験を今後の学びや活動に活かしていきたいと考えています。 We attended the RCE Youth Conference held at Kobe University. Panel Discussion With the Former Deputy Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture

北九州ゾンタクラブが前福岡県副知事をお迎えして実施した講演会「自分らしい生き方をするために：　ダイバーシティとインクルージョン」に参加し、その後のパネルディスカッションにはパネリストとして参加しました。これから自分の将来について考えていこうとしている私にとって、多くの学びがある時間でした。パネルディスカッションでは、まだ学生である私と多くの経験をしてきた方々とでは、物事の考え方や受け取り方が異なることを実感し、とても刺激を受けました。この経験を糧に、自分の選択で将来を切り開いていきたいと思います。(Hinako - 英語学科2年生) I attended a lecture organised by the Kitakyushu Zonta Club, featuring the former Vice Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture, entitled ‘Living Authentically: Diversity and Inclusion’, and subsequently took part in the panel discussion as a panellist. As I am currently beginning to think about my future, it was a time of great learning for me. During the panel discussion, I realised that my perspective and way of thinking, as a student, differ from those of people who have had a wealth of experience, and I found it very inspiring. I intend to use this experience as a stepping stone to forge my own path in the future through my own choices.
