The International College of Liberal Arts is a liberal arts college in Yamanashi, Japan. iCLA is a liberal arts college located in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan.

This is the official page for the International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) at Yamanashi Gakuin University (山梨学院大学: www.ygu.ac.jp). We offer a 4-year degree program for our Bachelor of International Liberal Arts. The main language of instruction is English. At iCLA, students can learn under a truly international academic environment. Our faculty members come from around the world, and our stude

nt population includes both Japanese and international students. Students also have the opportunity to study at one of our 60+ partner universities in over 30 countries across the globe. iCLA offers six majors within an innovative liberal arts curriculum: Global Business and Economics, Interdisciplinary Arts, Interdisciplinary Data Science, Japan Studies, Political Science, and Psychology. In addition to these six areas of study, students can enhance their academic experiences through electives such as Japanese language, or any of our experiential learning workshops. iCLA offers the unique opportunity for students to experience Japan and its exceptional culture while acquiring a contemporary and globally relevant education at our state of the art facilities.

The Gala Committee curated a stunning exhibition of student artwork and the iCLA lobby was reimagined into a nostalgic tribute to 1980s Japan!

What an incredible Summer Gala! Our community came together to celebrate art, music, and fashion with fantastic stage performances, art exhibition, and fashion show that really highlighted the diverse talent and creativity at iCLA.

The theme of this semester's event was "City Pop", the vibrant genre of Japanese pop music from the 1980s. The iCLA lobby was transformed with fabulous bubble-era Japan–inspired decor, thoughtfully designed and created by the Gala Committee.

The event also included a Chill Room organized with Professor Darren Ashmore. This relaxing space invited students to unwind by building plastic models, playing board games while lounging on bean bags, and enjoying light snacks and drinks.

Students enjoyed a variety of refreshments including yakisoba, pizza, and drinks such as melon soda and agua de jamaica during the Gala.

The students of the Gala Committee, Professor Mike Blow, Professor Sam Stocker, and the Student Affairs Team have worked hard to make this amazing event happen. From the decor, fashion, and music to the art and food, every detail helped create a truly outstanding community event. A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to planning and organizing this memorable Summer Gala 2026!

Students participated in an Ikebana workshop held on campus, where they explored the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement! The program was held as part of the iEXPerience Program, which is a series of programs organized by iCLA to provide opportunities to learn about and connect with local culture and society.

Ikebana, also known as Kado (“the way of flowers”), is a traditional Japanese art form with roots in Buddhism. By intentionally arranging flowers, leaves, and branches, practitioners create aesthetic compositions that showcase balance and harmony.

The workshop was led by certified Sogetsu Ikebana instructor and iCLA Administrative Office staff member, Ekaterina.

What comes after graduating from iCLA with a Psychology major? How do you choose between professional practice, research, or further specialization?

To help students navigate these important decisions, the Psychology Team is offering a three-part seminar series on postgraduate career pathways, led by Professors Chun Yuen Terence Fong, Ayano Tsuda, and Wai Him Crystal Law.

Designed for Psychology majors considering their next steps after graduating from iCLA, the series explores a range of postgraduate opportunities available both in Japan and internationally. Drawing on the faculty members' extensive expertise and experience, the seminars provide practical guidance on identifying suitable programs, understanding professional qualifications, and planning for long-term career success.

The first seminar, presented by Professor Chun Yuen Terence Fong on June 22, focused on the key considerations involved in pursuing postgraduate education after gaining a solid foundation in Psychology at iCLA.

Session 2: Japan Pathways led by Prof. Ayano Tsuda will take place on June 29 (Mon).
Session 3: Global Pathways led by Prof. Wai Him Crystal Law will take place on July 8 (Wed).

New Interdisciplinary Arts professor of Spring Semester 2026, Dr. Wung Cheong Chim is an expert on literature and philosophy.

His classes for Spring Semester 2026 include Literature Appreciation, The Art of Storytelling, and Superhero Comics, Films, and Shows.

The most important thing he wishes students would learn from his courses is the ability to reflect and to think deeply about why things are the way they are.

It may be uncomfortable, Dr. Chim says, as it means "partially rejecting what you think is common sense and looking deep, and realizing it is manufactured or fabricated."

But that ability to question and reflect is a "very important skill" to have in this time and age, Dr. Chim thinks.

Working in Japan has always been a goal for him, having often visited Japan for research.
"I've mostly only dealt with Japanese culture from the outside, literally because I was living outside of Japan. But now I'm looking forward to seeing, or I suppose experiencing, the very culture that I've been researching," says Dr. Chim.

Introducing Dr. Randy Fowler, one of iCLA's newest professors joining the Global Business and Economics program!
A specialist in International Business, Dr. Fowler was inspired to pursue this subject area thanks to his meaningful experiences working abroad in Taiwan.

But originally drawn to the research side of academia, teaching was not in Dr. Fowler's plan. While completing his PhD, he discovered that he loved teaching and getting students interested in learning.

"I really enjoy the dialogue between my students. It's gratifying to me if I succeed in getting them interested in something, which I try to do by mixing in some entertainment value into the teaching," says Dr. Randy Fowler.

His role model in teaching is ancient Greek philosopher Socrates,
who taught his students by asking questions. Dr. Fowler practices that principle in his own classes.

"I like the idea of going on an exploration with my students, questioning everything and trying to figure out if we can arrive at the truth," he says.
