On April 12, 2025, Associate Professor Phan Xuan Tan, a faculty member of the Innovative Global Program, College of Engineering, gave one of the opening talks at TAIS 2025 (Technical AI Safety Conference)—a conference held in Tokyo focused on responsible AI development.
In his talk, Assoc. Prof. Tan introduced Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) and its newly developed course on AI Safety, which covers foundational topics such as AI alignment, model interpretability, and the societal impact of advanced AI technologies. The course reflects SIT’s efforts to equip students with the knowledge and ethical awareness needed to contribute responsibly to the development and deployment of AI.
The conference gathered participants from a wide range of backgrounds, including researchers from AI startups such as Araya, Far.AI, and METR, as well as professors from the University of Tokyo and Nihon University. A representative from Japan’s AI Safety Institute (AISI)—a government organization established in 2024 to develop national standards for AI safety evaluation—was also in attendance.
Although modest in scale, the event provided meaningful discussions and valuable networking opportunities with researchers and practitioners working on the frontlines of AI safety in Japan.
