Can you guess who this Nobel Prize laureate is? This is a picture of him as a child.

Here are some clues:
- His interest in chemistry was ignited in the fourth grade of elementary school when his teacher recommended a book called 'The Chemical History of a Candle' by Michael Faraday.
- He majored in quantum organic chemistry at Kyoto University as a student of the Department of Petrochemistry, Faculty of Engineering.
- He began his career as a corporate researcher at Asahi Kasei Corp. in 1972 and was expected to find the seeds of new technology. His first three ideas were unsuccessful.
- But then, he developed the first commercially viable lithium-ion battery.

🌟 That's a wrap on this year's KU-STAR Program!🌟

The KU-STAR program provides outstanding students from outside Japan the opportunity to experience the research environment at Kyoto University 🧪

This year from January 8th to February 20th, ten students selected from four Australian universities were given the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new academic and cultural environment 📚 🔬

Students from such diverse places as Australia, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and the Philippines were able gain valuable research skills in laboratories at Kyoto University. They also received Japanese lessons and got to experience traditional hime-wagasa, miniature Japanese umbrella-making 🔭🎌 ☂️

Kyoto University hopes to one day welcome these students back to our campus as graduate students, or to continue collaborating with them as researchers. Congratulations on completing the program! 👏

We are sad to share the news that Ai, a chimpanzee celebrity at the university’s primatology institute in Inuyama (EHUB), passed away last week at the age of 49.

Ai made headlines for her impressive memory skills, which helped researchers better understand chimpanzee learning and perception. She is survived by her son, Ayumu, who still resides at EHUB.

Thank you, Ai ♥️🐒 (1976-2026)
